WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ Nine people from Queens, the Bronx and various suburbs have been arrested for roles in a gambling ring that took in $12 million a year in sports bets, the Westchester County district attorney said Tuesday.
Two more suspects were fugitives, District Attorney Jeanine Pirro said.
State police and Pirro's investigators executed 36 search warrants Monday and made the arrests while seizing computers, cell phones, gambling records, cash and a gun, Pirro said. The organization wagered on college and professional basketball, football, baseball, hockey and horse racing.
The ring allegedly operated from various locations in the Bronx, Nassau County and Westchester County, including the Ardsley Motor Inn in Ardsley.
Court papers referred to the ring as the Hank Burrough Gambling Organization, and Henry "Hank" Burrough, 63, of Hartsdale, was among those arrested and charged with enterprise corruption, which is punishable by up to eight and one-third to 25 years in prison.
His lawyer, Robert Koppelman, would not comment.
The enterprise corruption charge was also lodged against seven others from the Bronx, New Rochelle, Yonkers and Jericho. In addition, a man from New Rochelle was charged with criminal usury, a charge usually applied to loan sharking.
Arrest warrants charging enterprise corruption were issued for a Bronx man and a Fairlawn, N.J., man.
