If you are receiving W-2's then you will pay the state that you earned the income in, and not your home state. I know that pro athletes end up paying state income taxes to 20 or more states. If it is self-employment income, then I don't know the answer.

You are supposed to pay taxes based on your physical location where you were working when you earned the money. Each state sets a different threshold for the number of hours needed.

I had to file state reutns for NY, NJ, PA, and Cali this year. I worked in Mizz, but not enough to reach their threshold.

You can offest the wages tax against your home state.

If you are in Cali doing work for a NY client, but never physically leave Cali, then you do not need to worry. Based on your physical location.

Hope this helps.

The only positve is my company "mocks" up my pay so I am not hit with any additional tax. Cali really sux in how they do it. My accountant still thinks this is all being done incorrectly, but to my benefit.

I end up getting refunds from all but PA.
