New York, NY (Sports Network) - Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett was named as a member of the All-NBA First Team, announced Sunday by the National Basketball Association.
Garnett, who was the only unanimous First Team selection, received a league- high 615 points and was named to the All-NBA First Team for the third time in his career.
The 27-year-old Garnett set career-highs as he was second in the league averaging 24.2 points and first in rebounding posting 13.9 boards per contest.
He led the NBA with a personal-best 71 double-doubles and helped lead Minnesota to the top seed in the Western Conference as the Timberwolves set a franchise record with 58 wins.
Rounding out the 2003-04 All-NBA First Team are San Antonio forward Tim Duncan, New Jersey guard Jason Kidd and Lakers' guard Kobe Bryant and center Shaquille O'Neal.
Duncan, who had 597 points, became only the seventh player in NBA history to be named to the All-NBA First Team in his first seven seasons in the league. Duncan joins Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, George Mikan, Bob Pettit, and Oscar Robertson.
The two-time MVP averaged 22.3 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.68 blocks per game this season. Duncan also recorded more 30 point-15 rebound games than any other player this season with seven.
San Antonio, which won a championship in 1998-99 as well as last year, is looking to be the first repeat champion since the Los Angeles Lakers won three straight from 2000-02.
Kidd averaged 15.5 points and an NBA-best 9.2 assists this season despite missing part of the year with various injuries. The Nets point guard, who has guided New Jersey to the NBA Finals two straight campaigns, was named to the All-NBA First Team for the fifth time in six years and received 421 votes.
Kidd became the first Nets player ever to lead the league in assists in back- to-back seasons. He also recorded nine triple-doubles this season, which tied him with Bird for fourth all-time with 59 career triple-doubles.
Bryant, who has battled distractions for his ongoing alleged sexual assault case and injuries throughout the season, persevered to average 24.0 points per contest, the fourth highest total in the league.
The Lakers guard, who was named to the First Team for the third consecutive year, also hauled in 5.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Bryant, who earned 582 votes, helped lead Los Angeles to a league-best 25-7 record after the All- Star break.
O'Neal, a center, made the All-NBA First Team for a fifth straight year. He posted 21.5 points per game and led the league with a 58.4 field-goal percentage. The 7-1 O'Neal also averaged 11.5 rebounds and blocked 2.48 shots per game.
The All-NBA Second Team consists of the Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O’Neal, Sacramento Kings forward Peja Stojakovic, Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Sam Cassell and Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady, who led the league in scoring averaging 28.0 points per outing.
The All-NBA Third Team includes Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd and New Orleans Hornets guard Baron Davis.
The 123-member voting panel of writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada consisted of national media members and members from each of the league’s 29 teams who regularly cover the NBA. The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.
