Thinking of going to Vegas for the first time with my girlfriend in May. Basically from Canada most of the packages seem to be 3 night Thur - Sun or 4 nights Sun - Thur.

Prices are about the same - but hotel selection is much better for midweek. My question: is the action/atmosphere going to be just as good midweek as on the weekend? The trip will be split between gambling, shopping, dining, shows, etc. I know it won't be as packed as on the weekends - just want to know if the atmosphere will be as energetic, or will it be a ghost-town?

Thanks for the advice

Mike.

Weekends are higher limits at the tables and more action in the clubs. It isn't dead during mid-week, but many clubs aren't going, the bars and casino floors will be far more subdued. That can be a good thing or bad thing, depending on how much you want crowds and activity.

I've been to Vegas about 6-7 times and midweek is definitely better. There is all the action with less crowds. If you play table games, would you rather have 2 or 3 others at a table where everyone can stretch their legs, play two spots if you want, have a relaxed cocktail waitress bring you drinks (quickly) who has time to chat a bit with you, or would you rather have to squeeze in as the 7th player between 2 fat people and wait half an hour for your drink served by a grumpy waitress who won't give you the time of day?

Weekends brings the SoCal crowd. Midweek is better. Splurge and have the lunch buffet at Bellagio. Outstanding. Paris is supposed to be good too. The trick is going the the lunch buffet late and stay thru to the dinner. Ride he Coaster at NYNY. Good fun.

mid-week is less crowded and results in less lines and traffic, much lower hotel rates ( if your paying and not comped) and in general a much better Las Vegas experience.

I get comp rooms any day. I wish I could get enough time off from work to go mid-week but its impossible. If you can go then, go.

Definitely off days, and fly in a window seat at night, if going for the first time, the neon is fab on a clear night.

Weekends in Vegas can be a pain, with all the LA & SF weekend warriors clogging up the Strip and Sportsbooks.

Yet as other mentioned, it is still 24/7/365 to most any endeavor you would wish for, with only less tourists to maze.

Besides all the trumpeted celebrity-chef/satelite hotel fare,etc..are also quality local food establishments like Andres(3 locations), Rosemary's, Tillerman, Dona Marias, Lotus Of Siam, Yolies, Pieros,Thai Spice, Cafe Michelle, Z-Tejas(out of Austin), Paymon's Med-Cafe, Celebrity Deli,etc..

If Canada doesn't have them, try fast food from In & Out Burger, or a Fatburger when in the west..then prepare to cry when realizing you are now addicted with no way of getting a fix when home!

Neon, Voodoo Lounge, Palm, or anything Hard Rock Hotel,etc..is probably your speed, if between the ages 23 & 35.

If for an extended stay, Lake LV & Mead, Red Rock,or even Mt.Charleston make for a nice diversion.

Visit Fremont St & also catch a good show, it sounds cliche, but really is a part of the Vegas experience(like NYC/5th Ave/Broadway.)

Look before stepping off the curb, as LV mortality rates aren't all based on inflation via suicides, you can get run over in an NYC second!

Escape the hotels while there, even though they try to milk your every dollar, by only having the conveyor belts run in one direction(in), no clocks, and the drinks flowing,etc..

Have fun!

Put on a good pair of walking shoes. You will not believe how big of a hotel it is until you actually see it for yourself. Pools are great and the weather has been awesome for over a month. You will love it.

Midweek is just as exciting, and you can actually get into some of the good restaurants and shows. The weekends are too chaotic. Usually you can get much better rates mid week. Perhaps now is the exception, but a lot of good hotels run specials mid week that are awesome!

when you leave town, get a set on the airplane on the left hand side as you enter - and get a window seat.

the reason is when the plane flies out of vegas - if you are seated on the left side of the plane - it flies out to the west - meaning those people who are seated on the left side of the plane as you enter it - get a GREAT view of the strip as you fly out - since the strip is now on your right hand side.

i now this is all confusing - but just ask for seats on the window on the left side of the plane as you get on - trust me here. conversely - if you want to see the strip as you enter town - get seats on the right hand side of the plane when you get on your vegas inbound flight.

Winky, if you ask for seats on the left hand side they will give you the opposite side of the plane. If you are on Southwest, then go ahead and follow this advice. If you are going on anyone else and get assigned seats then ask for the right side of the plane because that is how the reservation chart is set up on a screen.

And don't think this is 100% certain to work either as about 75% of the time the planes take off to the west, but on occasion due to the wind might take off in other directions. If you are really lucky, you will be flying in and landing from the north and you will be sitting on the right side. With that the plane usually banks right around downtown for a good view, then you are going parallel to the Strip with incredible views. But for the probably hundreds of times I have flown into McCarran, I have seen that view maybe 3 times.

Have a great time but don't forget the walking shoes.

Saw Sarah Brightman in March there and it took over 20 minutes to walk from the garage to the venue.
