MILWAUKEE (AP) Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Roberto Alomar broke a bone in his right hand Tuesday night and was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time since 1998.

The Diamondbacks expect him to be sidelined for a while. Manager Bob Brenly said his guess was six to eight weeks, minimum.

Alomar was fearing the worst.

''At my age, you don't want to be on the DL for so long,'' the 36-year-old said. ''In the game of baseball, you never know when it will be over. But you never get prepared for this. I can cheer, that's all I can do right now.''

Alomar, signed as a free agent in the offseason, was hit by a pitch from Milwaukee's Ben Sheets in the sixth inning of the Diamondbacks' 4-2 loss.

He said he was in so much pain that he knew immediately a bone was broken. X-rays revealed a fracture of the bone connecting the pinky and the wrist. Alomar was placed in a splint and will be re-evaluated after the swelling subsides, expected to be several days.

He was replaced by pinch-runner Matt Kata, who remained in the game at second base. Brenly said Kata would start in Alomar's absence.

Infielder Chad Tracy was recalled from Triple-A Tucson and will join the team Wednesday in Milwaukee.

Alomar was placed on the 15-day DL for the first time since July 19-Aug. 4, 1998, when he sprained his right little finger while sliding into second base on July 18 at Anaheim when he was with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 12-time All-Star was batting .222 when he got hurt.
