FBI agents arrested Blues center Mike Danton in San Jose, Calif., on Friday on charges of trying to set up a murder for hire here at his home in Brentwood.
A criminal complaint filed against Danton, 23, in federal court in East St. Louis accuses him and a woman of attempting to hire a man from Monroe County to kill an acquaintance with whom Danton had quarreled Tuesday night.
The complaint says the argument concerned Danton's "promiscuity and use of alcohol," and that Danton "begged the acquaintance not to go to the general manager of the St. Louis Blues hockey organization and ruin his career."
Also accused in the complaint is Katie Wolfmeyer, 19, of Florissant, who was arrested Thursday night. She is accused of helping Danton find a prospective killer.
Nobody was injured in the plot, officials said. The would-be hired killer cooperated with the FBI, whose agents taped some incriminating phone calls, according to court documents.
The complaint quotes from a call the intended victim made to Danton on Friday, asking why he wanted to have him murdered: "Danton broke down and sobbed. Danton explained that he felt backed into a corner and also felt that the acquaintance was going to leave him."
Danton played in Thursday night's playoff game in San Jose.
