I don`t care if Bonds hits 900 homeruns he will never be considered a greater ballplayer than George Herman 'Babe' Ruth.

The Babe will always be the man, 50 years from now or 300 hundred years from now...

His name alone has a larger than life mystique attached to it, there will never ever be a greater baseball player, or sports figure than The Bambino...

Thank You JMAN, absoluetly the best and most true statement ever made, i cant stand the yankees but i wont even discuss this matter with anyone.. Babe Ruth did things that transcended the game and somehow saved baseball.. He was more than the game, more than the numbers,, but he still beats bonds numbers wise on alot of fronts..

HR per at bat.
.347 lifetime batting average, bonds is below .300.
pitching feats.
He out homered many other entire teams some years..

I wont argue this matter, with me its fact..

What it must have been like to be Babe Ruth!

You will NEVER see a thread on who the greatest athlete from BALTIMORE is..........because Babe would garnish 99.9999% of the votes.

Waste of time!

BABE IS A GOD AND ANYBODY THAT VOTED FOR MJ OVER THE BAMBINO AS THE GREATEST AMERICAN ATHLETE HAS SOME SERIOUS MENTAL ISSUES!!

Achievements:

Babe Ruth was one of only two people (Reggie Jackson being the other) to ever hit three home runs in a World Series game and is the only one to do it twice (1926 & 1928).

Babe Ruth is credited with the invention of the modern baseball bat. He was the first player to order a bat with a knob on the end of the handle. Louisville Slugger produced the bat with which he hit 29 home runs in 1919.

Babe Ruth holds the record for the longest complete game victory in World Series history. In 1916, as a member of the Boston Red Sox, Ruth went 14 innings to defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs 12 times.

When Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927, he hit 14% of all home runs in his league that year. For a player to hit 14% of all home runs today, he would have to hit over 300 home runs in one season.

From 1915-17, Ruth won 65 games, more than any other southpaw in the majors.

In 1920, Ruth established a still-standing mark with his .847 slugging average. He followed that with the second-highest mark ever (.846) in 1921.

Ruth altered the salary structure of the game - via a trickle-down effect. His highest salary was $80,000 annually in 1930 and 1931. He suffered a $5,000 pay cut in 1932 despite hitting .373, leading the majors in 1931 with a .700 slugging percentage, tying for the lead in homers with 46 and knocking in 163 runs.

After the Red Sox sold him to the Yankees, Ruth single-handedly outhomered the entire Boston team in 10 of the next 12 seasons.

Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were the two greatest offensive Yankees ever.

My brother taught me to read starting at age 3 and by first grade I read my first baseball bios....Ruth and Gehrig.

All time slugging average.

1920-1921 two greatest back to back seasons in history.

I've no complaint with any of Bonds' accomplishments, including his 661 blasts. He deserves acknowledgement for his place and his likely place as most HRs ever.

Roids or not, if hitting 661 homers was so easy, it would happen more than four times in 70 years.

But 'Greatest Hitter'?

Tis to laugh

Back then a walk in the Babe Ruth era was consider a base hit so that's why he has a high batting average. With all the intentional walks Barry gets and in playing in Ruths era he might as well had a career batting average of 400 who knows. Also, We have to remember not as much competition their was no Black players or latin players just strickly nothing but a white MLB league. Also another thing at that time most teams had 2 to 3 men starting rotations so I'm sure most of these guys had dead arms by the middle of season well except for people like Babe Ruth or Cy Young. I'm am not knocking the Babe maybe he is the best ball player ever but I've never seen him play this was way before many of our time. Some would argue the same thing about Chamberlain in the NBA being the best ever as he holds the most or just about all the NBA records, But I disagree as I'm sure most of you do as Michael Jordan being the best ever. It's just hard to compare Ruth and Bonds, Just two different eras and am not so sure the atheletes from 50 years ago are better than the current ones from today.

Celaya, in the Ruth era, walks were never considered a basehit. They were not figured into the batting average at all. Just like today when a player walks it is considered "a no time at bat". (Using your logic of a walk = hit, Ruth would have hit over .500 some years.)

when the babe hit 29 homeruns in 1919 he shattered
the major league mark of 24 by over 20%. and
of course for an encore he follows up with 54 in
1920, simply an over 70% improvement. that 2
year stretch can arguably be called the most dominant
individual achievement in sports history.

Are you sure scottyz?, I have been told that yes walks were considered base hits back at that time during Ruths era and added on to their batting averages unlike today were thay don't count to their average. Wil, I know you know a lot of the history of the game can you elaborate information on this on whether walks were indeed base hits and added on to the batting averages of the likes of babe ruth,Ty cobb, etc. Peace.

I don`t believe any of Ruths walks were counted as hits...I mean my gosh the man had a ton of walks too...He was always walking 150+ times a year...

I am not sure when that rule changed, but I believe it was around the turn of the century.
