Angels grant OF Anderson extension through 2008
April 13, 2004
SportsLine.com wire reports

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim Angels slugger Garret Anderson agreed to a contract extension through 2008 on Tuesday, with an option for 2009.

Anderson is a two-time All-Star and was the game's MVP last year. In 2003, he hit .315 with 29 home runs and 116 RBI. The 31-year-old center outfielder is in his 10th full season and is the Angels' career hits leader.

"We stated before that signing Garret to a contract extension was a priority," general manager Bill Stoneman said.

Anderson was the Angels' fourth-round draft pick in 1990.

He will go down as one of the most underrated hitters ever. Because he's not juiced up and doesn't hit 50 homers, he gets no publicity. I'd take him on my team any day of the week.

Garret Anderson could be on his way back to Southern California.
The Dodgers are exploring the idea of signing Anderson to be their fourth outfielder and have been in contact with his agent, Scott Boras, according to multiple sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because talks are ongoing.
Anderson, who played 15 years of his 16-year career with the Angels, hit .268 with 13 home runs and 61 runs batted in over 135 games for the Atlanta Braves last season. He started 124 games in left field and earned $2.5 million.
Anderson turns 38 in June.
Anderson is among the handful of veteran free agents the Dodgers are looking at to replace Juan Pierre, who was traded to the Chicago White Sox this off-season. Jason Repko and Xavier Paul are the leading in-house candidates for the job.
