MILWAUKEE -- Houston Astros pitcher Andy Pettitte was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left elbow.

Pettitte, signed to a three-year, $31.5-million free-agent contract in December after spending nine years with the New York Yankees, injured the elbow while trying to check his swing in his first start for Houston on Tuesday against San Francisco.

An MRI on Thursday revealed inflammation in the elbow and a strain in his flexor tendon, according to the Astros.

The move was made retroactive to his last start.

The left-hander allowed six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings in the loss to the Giants. He walked two and struck out three.

Pettitte was scheduled to start Monday at St. Louis. A replacement starter has not yet been named.

Pettitte went 21-8 with a 4.02 ERA in 33 starts last season in New York. His last stint on the disabled list came from April 21 to June 14, 2002, when he was out with left elbow tendinitis.

Houston recalled right-handed reliever Brandon Backe from Triple-A New Orleans to fill Pettitte's roster spot.
