Odd, I always figured that these books in Autralia would be better prepared for such things. They've been down for days.

I don't think anyone is prepared for the DOS. this is complicated stuff.

But there are measures that one can do in order to slow down the DOS.

One can configure their routers to intercept the tcp request and establish that there is a connection to the source before sending it to the server. The router can also allow connections to the server and monitor to see if it can make a connection to the source, if not then the a request is sent to the server to clear that request. Another thing is that servers can be configured to drop looped requests from specific address that are resending requests. There are other things that can be done with the servers. My Linux teacher told me about this like two months ago, there was more that he said.

But the main thing is that all network based machines are dumb. You gotta tell it what to do. So one can give it instructions that might not make it impossible to D.O.S, but definitely harder. These guys will always pick on those that are the easiest targets. So I see your point, yet it is possible to make it more of a deterrent for wouldbe hackers.
