In a news conference Friday, a reporter from The Chronicle of Higher Education asked Knight about education and intercollegiate athletics.

Knight said that if the university presidents were "really serious about education — which they haven't been, as far as athletes are concerned — if they are serious about it, then they will devise a plan where only a kid who has graduated with a degree or completed his eligibility with a degree can be replaced by a scholarship. I said that over 25 years ago."

The plan wouldn't be accepted, Knight said, "because presidents would look at that and say, `We can't have a football team,' or `We can't have a basketball team.' "
