The best NBA team that did'nt win it all

The 1994-95 Orlando Magic

How did I think of this? Well, today was St. Patrick's day as you know. And I decided to wear my #20 Sherman Douglas Jersey that I had purchased at the celtics pro shop for $120. I wanted it becuase it was a hot item at the time, and in the area. Being a big C's fan and also Syracuse being my favorite college, I saw this as a no brainer. And besides, this was a game 4 eliminating situation in the playoffs. There was a good chance we could lose this game, since we were facing the Shaquille O'neal led Magic, the #1 team in the eastern confrence (57-25). A likely loss meant this was going to be the historic last game ever played at the storied Boston Garden. Auerbach's best cuban could'nt save us here. and it dawned on me when I had spoke with famed Boston globe columnist Bob Ryan, just prior to the game.

I told him I liked seeing him sunday on ESPN sports reporters and how he always seemed to make Mike Lupica his bitch without trying. I admired it. "what's your name?" Bob said with a semi serious cocked brow. "Rob." I said. "Rob what?" he replied.

This geniunely had me confused. Even if he was some b.s. con artist, why the hell do you ask for a guys last name? I mean, he's Bob Ryan. He covers everything and anything in Boston sports and then some. He then later shows up routinely on sundays for ESPN to let you know what he thinks, wether you care for his opinion or not.

After a short discussion, he says "well root hard for the C's Rob, they're going to need it." I kept thinking to myself, "where is Bobby's confidence at?! we're pushing this to a game 5. We don't go out losing in the garden's last game. No way!"

The game was close and exciting most of the way. But no matter what good fortune came our way, I never got comfortable becuase the Magic were so damn NASTY.

In the last two minutes of the game, Penny Hardaway had two dunks in traffic, each play in a half court set and each play starting from the top of the key with some razzle dazzle and him just str8 up stuff'n it over cats. I had never seen anything like this. I still have'nt. it was just sick. It was almost as if Penny just said to himself, "o.k. enough of this crap, I'm putting the game away." and decided to just dunk over anything in his path two straight possesions.

Penny had those commercials with the talking doll and Chirs Rock voice overs for a reason. Before the injurys and the Phoenix trade, he as a phe-nom. End of story. He was just plain nasty.

the Magic won the game and the series, 95-92. We rushed the floor in pandemonium, acting like we won. Despite our defeat.

the Magic's starting lineup:

C - O'Neal, Shaquille
SF - Scott, Dennis
PF - Grant, Horace
PG - Hardaway, Anfernee
SG - Anderson, Nick

they would lose to the Rockets 4-0 in the finals. I blame coach Brian Hill for this. He had a wealth of talent to work with, but just couldnt get the boys ready for playoff intensity when their overhwelming talent was'nt enough.

Come on, these Kings teams that keep finding a way to blow it are better than these guys. They just have that Laker phobia or whatever the hell it is that keeps them from winning it. At least Robert Horry isn't around to torture them this time...

1988-89 lakers

thru the first 3 rounds, they were 11-0. they had over 1 week off before the finals. pat riley put them thru a "boot camp" like workout to stay sharp. byron scott hurt his ankle (?) and in G1 of the finals - magic pulled a hammie and sat for the rest of the playoffs. pistons swept the lakers - in a series the lakers win WITH magic and byron.

might also put the 1983-84 lakers in here, too. lakers gave away 2 games and against the celtics - you can't do that.

The refs handed the Lakers this series, but still Pistons win in 6 if Rodman doesnt miss a layup or was it a traveling call?

How incredible was Zeke in game 6, Rail? Honestly in my opinion that is the most courageuos sporting performance I have witnessed in my life.

As for the question, I disagree on the '88 Pistons. Amazing talent but didn't have the maturity just yet. My vote goes to the '93 Suns. I thought that team was better than most of the famed Lakers or Celtics teams in the 80's.

with all of the talent the suns had, the #1 reason why they didn't win it that year was the injury to (fellow Cal State Fullerton Titan) Cedric Ceballos who missed the entire series. if he was healthy - the Suns win it - ZERO doubt about it - and everyone knew it.

as for the 1988 pistons - as much of a die-hard lakers fan as i am - the refs DID steal that one from the lakers. that was a major league phantom foul on laimbeer to give kareem 2 FTs at the end of G6. lakers (and the refs) stole this one from the pistons - but having said that - the 1988 or 1984 lakers CLOBBER these pistons.

How about the 1993-94 Seattle SuperSonics. They had the best record that season 63-19 only to lose in the first round of the playoffs to Denver, That was the biggest upset in the nba playoffs in my opinion.

1999-2000 Portland Blazers should of won game 7 from the Lakers and would have won the NBA had they advance they had some great players on that team.

Rasheed Wallace,Scottie Pippen,Arvidas Sabonis,Damon Stadumire, Detlef Schremp, Steve Smith, Bonzi Wells, Brian Grant,Greg Anthony.

Easily the Orlando Magic with this lineup.....
Shaq....Penny Hardaway....Horace Grant....Dennis Scott....Nick Anderson....

They were just unbeatable at home. Those missed free throws at the end of Game 1 by Nick Anderson just seemed to turn their whole season around for the worst.......

de - niro, i'll never forget all those misses duckworth had down the stretch in those home losses to the pistons. typical adelman coached team, leave in the guy that hurts the team.

rail - with the exception of dantley, that same group of guys won 2 championships?! ill never forget the trade for aguire. dantley refused to report for his new team for a while. i felt bad for the guy.

and the 93 suns. yes... that team was just plain sick. another great team that was the victim of bad coaching. (paul westpaul)

hache ill never forget when dennis scott was drafted they had given a team ahead of them in the draft compensation for "not selecting dennis scott" i had never seen this before. . .and that was quite a rivalry they had with the bulls for those couple seasons switch coaches and the 95-96 magic come out on top.

Hey Rob, I still remember, Dennis Scott is still the only player that everyone said had "half~court" range coming into the draft.....and was serious about it! He sure showed it sometimes hugh. Do you remember the playoff series against Chicago when Penny scored 40+ points 2 games in a row and made Pippen look ridiculous.......

man penny hardaway really was all the talk now that i think of it. people were saying how it seemed unfair that orlando was able to get him after getting shaq.

this kid had hops, a first step, a sweet J, ball handle, strength, passing skills, height. he was a fiercer competitor than t-mac. he wouldnt have folded in that lakers 4th qtr like t-mac did the other day.

we never really got to see everything penny could do becuase the teams he played on in orlando were so dang talented. i mean orlando had 3 other guys who could hit for 35 on any given night.

A starting lineup of:

Bibby
Christie
Peja
Vlade
C Webb

Backed up by:

Bobby
Hedo
Pollard

That team could beat most of those mentioned here. I still cringe to think of the Lakers needing a miracle comeback and three crooked refs, not to mention a Blazer-like choke job in Game 7, was what kept them from the title. If they win it all this year all will be forgotten, but no doubt in my mind that team of two years ago was easily the best in the NBA and flat out blew it to the Lakers.

DENIRO, your right, Penny was a top 3 player and unstoppable back then, he proved that in the series I mentioned when he just domninated Pippen, scoring 40+ points 2 games in a row almost "breaking" Pippen's ankles on several occasions.

Yes, it was the knees. He had that freakin knee problem, and it just lingered and lingered, until it finally caused him to put on weight in places he didn't need it, and then eventually became just average. I still say that Magic team was the best to not win it all. Shaq tearing down backboards, Penny doing his magic, Dennis Scotty draining threes from everywhere on the court, Nick Anderson going inside and outside, and of course, Horace Grant still in the prime of his career, playing dominating D and rebounding. You also had a young Darrell Armstrong coming off the bench, as well as guys many don't remember that were underrated in Anthony Bowie, and Donald Royal with his fantastic Two~handed dunks down the lane. For some strange reason, that breakdown in game one against Rockets turned everything around. Blowing the Huge lead, the unreal shot by Kenny Smith (?) to tie the game, and the critical 4 straight free~throw missed by Nick Anderson was just too heartbreaking and apparently they never recovered......
