"The Old Cub" a movie documenting former Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo's life, will have two premieres this week, both benefitting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The movie, which was directed and filmed by Santo's son Jeff, will premiere Wednesday at the Chicago Historical Society in Chicago and Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The 90-minute documentary is an emotional ride. It details Santo's life and how he has dealt with his health issues, primarily the loss of both legs because of complications with diabetes.
His hospital time and rehab is interspersed with clips from his days with the Cubs, with whom he played from 1960-73. Chicago native Joe Mantegna narrates the film, which includes interviews with ballplayers, actors and broadcasters, many touting Santo's abilities, how influential he was to them and how he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
