ARMY Corporal Ken Ming Wong rifled through mail sent to soldiers serving in Northern Ireland stealing cheques, bank cards and money sent to them by their wives and parents in birthday cards, a military court was told.

Ming, a clerk in the Adjutant General's Corps attached to the Cheshire Regiment, wrote cheques in soldier's names and pocketed the cash," Capt Ciaran Gould, told the court martial.

He even wrote a cheque in the name of a soldier who was serving a sentence in the tough Military Corrective and Training Centre, the court martial in Colchester Essex, was told yesterday.

Today Ming, too, is in the same military prison, known as The Glasshouse, beginning twelve months detention after being reduced to the ranks and kicked out of the Army by the court martial.

The 31-year-old admitted 21 charges of theft, attempted theft, interfering with the mail and one of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He asked for a further six to be taken into consideration.

He stole more than £1,300 from Cheshire Regiment soldiers stationed in Dungannon, as well as letters from parents and girlfriends and birthday presents.

Defending barrister Robert Hill told the three-officer panel Wong stole to try to recoup what he had lost by gambling.

"He gambled his own money and has gambled with his marriage, his Army career and his good name," said Mr Hill.

Judge Advocate Paul Camp told Wong: "You and your wife and son will now lose your Army home. You preyed on members of your unit in a way which makes it impossible for you to stay in the Army.

thats sad. im sure some of those guys were really counting on that money and in some cases it was probably scraped together to help out a soldier who needed it.
