Sharps vs Squares

Could i get some examples of wagering differences between the two. What would a Sharp guy wager? What would a Square guy wager? I would like to read about some of the techniques used by both.

Thanks

But can give you a great exmaple! Squares are cleaning up with all these over in the 1st round of the MLB playoffs where sharps are probably fortunate to be breaking even on these bets along because they read lines, know lines and generally can nail lines and profit in the long run. A whole lot of these games, if researched would've pointed to unders but you know the rest

Squares tend to play favorite and over, regardless of the line.
As a result, lines for years have been shaded towards both those...which of course means...
Sharp guys tend to play dog and under.

This is, of course, a very generalized pattern.
A notable exception is when someone who is "supposed" to be a favorite, but is a dog...squares tend to jump all over the dog, because its "too good to be true" (I can get the Yankees even money in a must win game! No WAY they lose this one!).

Squares also will always bet their favorite team of course, regardless of the line.

Sharp guys look for value, and try to be on the right side of moves. Easier said than done, which is why many folks think they are sharp, but much fewer prove to be.

Sharps don't play 8 team parlays, squares do.

You knew that. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

THE SHRINK- what do you mean by a "bad line"? Do you mean a line that is obviously a mistake? (e.g. Miami +20 when should be -20)

Is another name for a "DumbAss" Gambler..

In my point of view you can categorise 5 different types of gamblers:
A) Those who want to bet a certain amount regardless of the price.
B) Those that are willing to loose a certain amount over a certain period and do not look at the price either.
C) Those that are price sensitive! These guys are a bookmaker's nightmare. They may not be any good, so one likes to take their money, but on the other side by giving them a slightly better price than they can find elsewhere, one may have just given them an edge.
D) Those that are truly knowledgeable, know that they have an edge and understand that the better the price, the higher their edge is. cool hand JIM belongs to this elite group.
E) Same as D, but in addition these guys also have a good opinion of how big their edge is in % and know how to play optimal (Kelly like). So far only Braveheart gave me that feeling.

A and B are Squares.
C, D and E are Sharps.

You didn't include your category which is that of a scalper. The bettor who might not know anything regarding the game other than what line Book A has compared to Book B.

A sharp player understands value.

He knows that IND is better than CIN but understands if they are 14 points better than CIN.

whatever

Shrink means that squares will bet a side regardless of the number (i.e. bad numbers). Sharps only like sides at a certain number (i.e. good numbers), and if they can't get that number they pass.

Baaaaaa! Baaaaaa!

Yeah, that sounds like something that I would do. If I like a certain team, I think that they will win big, regardless of what the number is. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

sharps know when to pass on a number squares dont, squares will lay 7 at one book and 8 at another an 9 at another and........

How about this one, sharps or wiseguys play favorites early in the week and dogs after the squares inflate the number on saturday..

Yep, bet good numbers yesterday and went 3 - 9.

In reality, sharps are winning players who do their homework, or have other great cappers doing the work, and then bet numbers that give them an edge.

Usually, as with most things in life, their hard work does pay off!!

There are only a handfull of guys who consistantly win, year after year however.

Many books are littered with ex-sharps as middle managers, whose luck and money managememt skills went bad.
