BOSTON -- John Henry Williams, the son of Hall of Famer Ted Williams, passed away Sunday morning. He was 35.
A spokesman for the Boston Red Sox confirmed the death of Williams, but did not give any details.
In October, Williams was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. For several weeks he underwent chemotherapy, with his condition not improving. His younger sister Claudia was a donor when he underwent a bone marrow transplant.
John Henry attempted a career in professional baseball in the summer of 2002.
He played with a low-level Red Sox minor league team, but after just two games his attempt ended when he got hurt. He suffered a fractured rib, while crashing into a camera.
Trying to make a comeback in several independent leagues, Williams was never successful in his attempt. Many experts in baseball believed that Williams started his career too late in life.
However, John Henry will be forever remembered as being in the center of a controversy involving the remains of his father Ted Williams. After the passing of Ted Williams, John Henry had his father's body taken to an Arizona cryonics lab. He and his half-sister batted back and forth over what to do with the remains of their deceased father. His half-sister had stated that her father wanted to be cremated.
The matter was eventually settled in December, when Ted Williams' oldest daughter, Bobby Jo Ferrell, dropped her objections.
Leukemia has been linked in the Williams family; Ted's brother passed away when he was in his 40s.
