How To: Be A Bookie

Watch sports and take money from suckers—but as your job.*

Maxim, January 2004

Get Action
If Uncle Sal isn’t able to show you the ropes from the state pen, you can get an easy start by offering to “sub-book” for a pro bookie during the summer. Some of them shut down after the NCAA tournament and don’t reopen until football season because they hate taking action on baseball—it means working seven days a week. So you can offer to use a bookie’s client list in return for doing all the work and giving him half your profits. Don’t like those odds? Strike out on your own. When taking a bet—try to do business over the phone—agree on what the guy currently owes you or is owed by you, write down his new bet, and repeat it back to him. Tabulate results on espn.com. It’s like being an athlete, without the exercise!

Get Money
Set it up correctly and you’ll be assured of making money thanks to the vig, a 10 percent “fee” bookies collect on all losing bets. If you do it right, with a total of $1,000 wagered on each side of a betting line, you end up paying out evenly—but thanks to the vig, you net $100. “Theoretically, our goal is always the 50-50 split,” explains Mark Goldman, director of Race & Sports at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. Check the spreads on sites like DonBest.com, then adjust the odds to local favorites; if you live in Detroit, give bad odds to the lowly Tigers and Lions because fans will still bet on them. If a guy doesn’t pay up, you’re not supposed to break his legs. Instead, work out a payment plan—how does 80 percent interest sound?

*As long as you don’t mind the fact that it’s illegal.

Actually being a small time local in the US. while illegal, is not that dangerous. First of all it is advisable to have a clean record to begin with, 2 or 3 time losers are much more likely to be treated harshly if busted. Always know who you are dealing with, nothing is 100% foolproof, but it is crucial you don't book action from some under-cover cop. On the other hand a lot of cops bet, and lose, getting paid is another matter. A small book of 15 to 20 players is ideal, and can be very profitable. Useing low limits, with no frills, a smart amateur bookie can do well. The biggest problem is no-pay situations, like the article says no one is going to get their legs broken, just set up some kind of payment plan, and cut the player off until he pays. A lot of guys work out of bars, you need to hang around whatever bar you choose quite a bit, buy drinks, tip well, be friendly, and sooner or later you will pick up players. Country clubs are also good spots to operate out of.

Why risk your neck doing something when you can get someone else to do it for you? No money, no problem. The following strategy will explain how to get a beating on somebody on the cheap.

Here it is:

1) Go to you local crappy neighborhood and buy 2 small ziplock bags worth of crack. Try to get the good kind.

2) Once you posses said baggie you find your local crackheads. Approach them, and shake one of the baggies in front of their faces. Believe me, you will have their undivided attention.

3) Explain that you posses another baggie full of candy and that both will be theirs the moment that a certain someone gets beat the **** up.

4) Watch the two crazed pitbulls tear into the slow-paying MOFO.

5) Pay the gus, you don't want them to turn on you.

6) Rinse, wash, repeat.

Back in the day........

I knew many people of very questionable character. Hanging out at the track and the local pool hall on the good side of 8 mile.

I met the bookie at the pool hall. A buddy and me would be in there 4 times a week. Sooner or later we got the hookup and started betting football. This guy was an old greek guy. We would settle on tuesday. Soon I brought him more and more players they were perfect lowball players never betting more than 200 but mostly 50. I started taking the calls and just passing it on to him. Hell in the end I didn't even bet and the guy would kick some back to me. I felt more of a rush doing that than betting.

LOL good old days.

Local pool halls are the perfect places.
