I hurt myself trying to drive a short par 4 on Monday. Now I cant even walk. Should I just rest for a week and take Tylenol, or should I see a Chiorparator in the morning?

Rail - Get your self to a chriopracter ASAP. Do not fool around with a bad back, you will just suffer needlessly if you wait to get treatment.

First put ice on it to get the swelling down AND THEN a heating pad after the swelling goes down. If you don't already, start doing a lot of stretching prior to playing anymore golf.

Rail, if it's just a muscle pull, cool it for a week(yeah-tough to do when you are talking about your back).

If it's a disc issue, treatment can "fix" some people, others need surgery.

I had a disc "cleaned up" about 7 years ago & it was the best thing that I've ever done for myself. It turned out to be worse than the MRI showed(still not quite sure how that happens....).

Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, and Shiatsu Massage Therapist(best option if just sore, & not truely hurt) is the three to consider.

Stay away from a Rolfing Massage, as it is too deep tissue in nature given your hurt back.

Hoping your feeling better Rail..or at least well enough to cap some Arena winners.

Chiropractors are quacks. Their manipulation usually makes back conditions WORSE over the long run. See a licensed MD, preferably an osteopath (bone doctor) or orthopedic surgeon.

Rail I feel your pain. Same shit happened to me trying to start a piece of shit lawnmower. Lots of bedrest and go see a neurologist and stay far away from Chiropractors.

go see a professional. i recommend a chiropractor. ice and heat will help if done at a certain time from when the injury occured ie..ice first 12-48 hrs immediately after the injury then progressed to (and in this order) heat/ice/heat....
basically after 48-60 hrs post trauma heat is used before and at the end of this regimen...
like the above poster said, stretching and a good warm-up is key before you start to swing the clubs again.
most back injuries need movement in order to facilitate healing. when i say movement i mean the joints/bones of the back need to be moved/adjusted/'cracked' and this should be done only by a professional. this will help to move fluid in and out of the stagnant/painful areas and ultimately nourish the areas. hope this helped more than confused.
ibuprofen (advil) is much better and less of a stress on the liver then acetominophen(tylenol).
and yes!!! get well soon as we need you for arena foots.

ppeter, why would he see an orthopedic surgeon? is surgery needed? 4 out of 7 back surgeries relieve the pain for the first year and by late in the second year the problem persists. an osteopath could help but what would they do except adjust the back in a similar fashion or even the same way a chiropractor would. not flaming you bro but the chiropratic quack stuff just tells me you are mis-informed with current studies. chiros cost less in the long run and is non-invasive and bottom line has shown to work at some level for most people (key word is most). biggest part here bro is that chiropractors are the best at spinal adjusting and i will go out on a limb and say the best for spinal and extremity(arms and legs) adjusting.
here's the catch....most chiropractors fit in this model i described.

Rail:

Charlie is correct for initial treatment. More likely than not it is muscular and not skeletal. I have suffered since injuring my back bowling in 1989. I was walking around like a crab for two weeks before I could straighten up. It hurt laying down, getting up, in the car, etc. After the swelling goes down, get to a doctor to make sure it is not skeletal before even considering a chiropractor. I sympathize with you believe me. As for medicine, an anti-inflamatory like ibuprofen as stated before is best. Tylenol is not an anti-inflamatory and will not do a lot of good. Your muscles are probably in spasm right now and the swelling is the body's way of trying to protect itself. As the muscles begin to relax, you will feel better, but do see a doctor as soon as you are up to it. Best of luck to you.
