A new season is upon us and Pedro is up to his old crap. The Red Sox are reporting Pedro will miss the first 3 days of workouts due to a "family situation". Pedro has a family situation EVERY SEASON! I don't know why I thought he would change, but I did, I am a sucker! This bunch of Sox players (Manny, Pedro, Nomar) have been pulling this crap for many seasons now. When will they stop?!

Word is Manny is pissed because he was going to use the same excuse. Manny has come up with a few ideas though....

1. He can call in and say he isn't at spring training yet because he got confused and reported to Rangers camp

2. He can call in and say he has laryngitis....oops he already used that one...back to the drawing board!

Let's hope the Sox don't pull this shit all season and hopefully Nomar doesn't cry like a bitch as he tends to do....

go Sox!

Not taking sides here, just a FYI. regarding Pedro situation.

Boston's Martinez may miss early workouts
By Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer, 2/19/2004

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Pedro Martinez may miss Boston's first three days of spring training because of a family medical issue.

The Red Sox ace, who reported after the other pitchers in 2000 and 2001, received permission from the club to report after the team's first official workout for pitchers and catchers on Saturday.

Martinez "has a very legitimate serious family issue that's going to be fine but does require his attention," Boston general manager Theo Epstein said Thursday. He declined to give further details, but the situation is believed to involve the health of a family member.

"He's going to do everything he can to get down here, but there's a chance that we might not see him till Monday night," Epstein said, "but we'll know more about that in the next couple of days."

While workouts start this weekend, the mandatory reporting date isn't until early March.

The reasons Martinez reported after the other pitchers in 2000 and 2001 weren't publicized.

"He's been a couple of days late in the past," Epstein said. "This was cleared with the club ahead of time. It's very legitimate and a serious issue that requires his attention."

Martinez was 14-4 and led the AL with a 2.22 ERA last season, his sixth with the Red Sox.

He will make $17.5 million this year and is among six Boston players eligible for free agency, joined by pitchers Derek Lowe and Scott Williamson, shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, catcher Jason Varitek and designated hitter-first baseman David Ortiz.

Epstein said that it was unrealistic to think the team could retain all of them.

"The finances don't necessarily add up," he said, "but that's not to say that we can't certainly retain some of the guys and also add some talent.

"To do good business and to execute a successful baseball plan, at times you have to be prepared for players to go into the last year of their contract," Epstein said. "It's not a panic situation for the player. It's not a panic situation for the club. It's not always easy to reach agreement on a contract ahead of time and, if both sides are reasonable, it can certainly be done after" the season.

Did you just put Nomar in the same club as Manny and Pedro? You sir are a moron. Nobody plays harder than Nomar...nobody. As for Pedro showing up 3 days late...who cares. When he wins 18 games with a sub 2.50 era as usual, won't seen like that big a deal.

Nomar DOES play hard, no doubt! Never said he didn't. (he's a great player too!) What I DID say is he cries like a bitch! And that, my friend, he does! I see your name is bosox1086 so it is safe to assume you follow the Sox. If you do indeed follow them and don't know that Nomar complains about EVERYTHING and bitches all the time, I don't know where you have been!

I hear what your saying Slim, but let's be honest...they get cheered because of how good they are at baseball. That being said, as my son is starting to get into baseball (he is 3) I would rather see him cheer for players such as Trot Nixon & Ellis Burks...guys that play hard, are good and aren't babies or bitches or assholes.

Slim has a point. I am also a Red Sox fan and over the years have a number of favorite players. Strange thing is on this team my only favorite in the slighest is 2nd year Red Sox David Ortiz. I do however root for the team as a whole. I believe a lot of Sox fans are that way to some extent. Put Pedro, Manny, or Nomar on any other team and they immediately become hugely disliked. In the past a few players like Carlton Fisk, and Fred Lynn moved to other teams but were still cheered at Fenway. Unlike Roger Clemons I will have to add.

I think you guys are wrong about Nomar. Boston LOVES him. When does he whine and complain? I know he's had some beefs with the media and keeps quiet now, but he doesn't cause near the commotion Manny and Pedro do. Nomar is EASILY Boston's most popular player.

no doubt. he isnt my favorite player, manny is. but nomar is wildly popular. no one holds anything against him at all.

that comment reminds me of myself when i stated that "a lot of yankee fans dislike stienbrenner" and someone quiped back "no true yankees fan dislikes george"

it shut me up on the issue. hey man, sometimes you dont know unless youre actually in that market.
