Anybody else want to say the NYY are not going to win the world series? Brown, Maddux, Vazquez, Mussina, Lieber/Contreras + Murders Row batting line-up.

this yankees team is far and away better then the Lakers in comparison..

the lakers had Kobe on trial for RAPE.. and signed two over-the-Hill players.. The balance of power in the West was much more even then what it is in the American League.. And I say that with the Angels looking great, The A's pitching as strong as ever, and the SOX looking like a powerhouse...

This would be like the lakers signing GARNETT and still having KOBE prior to the RAPE with O'neill and Payton and the Mailman...

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

Not to mention possibly the best Yankee pen EVER - Quantrill, Heredia, White, Karsay, Gordon & Rivera

Having a roster loaded with talent doesn't automatically translate into success or winning a championship.

Simply put, whoever wins the championship in any sport has to execute at a higher level than their competitor. And there is no guarantee that the team won't succumb to injuries.

Let's see now....what were the odds at the beginning of the season for the Yankees to win it all last year? They probably weren't all that attractive. The case was the same for the Lakers to win it all this year. Now the odds have changed dramatically. Had you bet at the beginning of the year, you would have a nice scalp on your hands right now.

Naww,

Maddux is over the hill, he's good for 6 innings and 3 earned runs. Brown is a great pitcher but injury - prone. Best deal was for Vasquez who is now better than both but will be a formidable task to replace all the innings and wins of Pettite, Clemens and Wells.

I'll believe it when I see it. Cashman told reporters TODAY that they were "not involved" with Greg Maddux". So they went from not involved to signing him within a few hours? Odd. This apparently comes from a "source" that told a NY radio station that he'd sign later in the week. Sounds flimsy to me. Rumors were also flying before Cashman shot them down today. We'll see. I can just see in the morning everyone denying any truth to this rumor. From mlb.com about 3 hours ago:

Yanks 'not involved' with Maddux
It looks like Greg Maddux won't be wearing pinstripes.

A Major League Baseball source told the Bergen Record that the Yankees were moving closer to signing the free-agent pitcher, who turned the Yankees down in the winter of 1992 before signing with the Braves.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, though, shot down the report during Monday's conference call with reporters announcing the Alex Rodriguez deal.

"We are not involved with Greg Maddux," Cashman said.

Maddux, who like Rodriguez is represented by agent Scott Boras, reportedly turned down a multi-year offer from the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. And the Chicago Cubs have raised their initial offer to Maddux of $10 million over two years, which was made Jan. 13. Details of the increase were not disclosed.

"I'd like to get something done, make my decision by the middle of next week, since most camps are opening," Maddux said recently. "But even if it's a few days after that, or even a week after that, I don't see it as a big deal. Spring Training is two weeks too long as it is. I've done my work all winter. I think after 20 years in pro ball I know how to get myself ready for a season."

Breaking News
Yankees: Is Maddux Next?
Are the rich going to get ridiculously richer? Reports are circulating that the Yankees may be close to signing free-agent pitcher Greg Maddux. But earlier in the day, GM Brian Cashman denied any interest in the 289-game winner.

I think this is basically Scott Boras planting the rumor to get the Cubs to bid against themselves. That's the kind of thing Boras will do. I don't believe that Maddux will end up in NY. He already rejected Baltimore because it's on the east coast and in the AL. I still say it'll either the Cubs or Dodgers.
