The state of IOWA seems to draw more attention towards gambling than even Vegas these days.
Investigation is involved in a case of embezzlement and illegal gambling in Ottumwa, officials said Monday. Two men were charged in the case.
Wapello County supervisor Jerry Parker pleaded guilty to bookmaking to end a widespread gambling probe and he was immediately given a 30-day suspended jail sentence.
Michael Feinstein, the former president of the Ottumwa Regional Health Foundation, pleaded guilty to taking more than $100,000 from the foundation during his tenure.
’I Did It’
Parker told the judge he took bets on ball games from friends over the past 10 years.
"I told my attorney, I can't deny that. I might do something I'm not supposed to do, but I don't lie about it. I did it and I'm going to step to the plate and say I did it," Parker said.
Parker said he pleaded guilty to keep others from being smeared in the case.
Judge Michael Mullins also sentenced Parker to one year of probation and a $1,500 fine.
The Ottumwa Police Department and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said the plea closed their gambling investigation.
John Quinn, DCI's special agent in charge, and Police Chief Dennis Massey said the gambling investigation extended to a number of individuals beyond Parker. But only Parker was charged.
Parker told NewsChannel 8 he won't step down from the county board of supervisors. He's up for election in 2006.
