Ottumwa, Iowa)--Charges filed by the Iowa Attorney General's Office accuse Wapello County Supervisor Jerry Parker of engaging in "bookmaking", or accepting bets, as a business. Court documents say Parker "did engage in bookmaking, to wit: did, as a business advance gambling activities by accepting bets upon the outcome of future contingent events, such as football and basketball games".
The charges state that between the years of 1993 and 2003, Parker took part in illegal gambling in the 4th degree, with a sum of money not exceeding $100, a serious misdemeanor. Parker will not be arrested on the charges, but is required to appear in court Monday, February 9, at 2:00 p.m. for his initial court appearance, arraignment and entry of a guilty plea.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation searched Parker's home and office a few weeks ago and confiscated 22 items from his residence including an old computer, telephone bills and caller I.D. box.
Parker told KTVO Tuesday that he plans to issue a statement concerning the charges next Monday following his arraignment.
