His ass is grass. Berating and haranguing the Chancellor? Good thing Bob didn't have his rifle.

Bob Knight was on the sideline to see Texas Tech break its two-game losing streak.

Just hours after the Hall of Fame coach was reprimanded by the school for his public outburst at the chancellor, No. 19 Texas Tech beat Baylor 83-63 on Tuesday night.

Andre Emmett scored 25 points for the Red Raiders in the aftermath of school officials reprimanding, but not suspending, Knight for his spate with university chancellor David Smith on Monday.

As Knight left the court the crowd cheered loudly and he acknowledged them by raising his right hand in appreciation.

After the game, Knight said he hadn't eaten in 48 hours and hadn't slept much. He said there were discussions about a suspension but that he would not have agreed with one.

Knight said he and his wife discussed the possibility Monday night and agreed to go "through whatever means were available to fight that but I would have stayed through the suspension simply because I feel so strongly about this situation, this school, this community and these kids and that would not have been easy for me to do but I would have done it with them."

Knight also said he "absolutely did not instigate anything" in the spate, and that at one point he considered himself "at fault."

Texas Tech (17-4, 5-2 Big 12) used a 13-2 run early in the second half to pull away from a halftime tie. The Red Raiders hit eight of their first 11 shots, outscoring Baylor 21-8 in the first seven minutes of the second half.

Baylor coach Scott Drew said Tech's quick start in the second half was tough to recover from.

"We don't have much depth, so it would have been easy to kind of lay down," he said. "Credit our players for coming back. In the second half, you saw why you don't want to have six scholarship players. They did a great job of wearing us down."

Knight, who led Indiana to three national championships, received a rousing ovation when he came onto the court a couple of minutes earlier than usual.

"I'm from Indiana," Drew said. "He got that reaction all the time."

Even a Baylor assistant, standing under the basket during warmups, applauded as Knight walked out and shook hands with him.

A row of students near the Texas Tech bench wore red T-shirts with white lettering that read, "Lettuce Support Coach Knight," a reference to rumors that lettuce had been thrown during the spat.

Armen Williams, a 20-year-old sophomore, painted his bare chest and arms in red acrylic and put in black: I (Heart) Coach Knight.

"There's been so many rumors it's hard to say if he got the right punishment," Williams said. "We'll definitely let Coach Knight know we support him, so he'll stay and he can continue to work his magic."

Emmett, who leads the Big 12 in scoring with a 21-point average, had lackluster performances against Oklahoma State (13 points) and Texas (nine points) last week. He was 9-of-17 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds against Baylor.

Ronald **** scored 22 points and Mikey Marshall added 11 for the Red Raiders.

Matt Saymen had 14 points and Terrance Thomas added 13 for the Bears (6-14, 1-6), who lost for the eighth time in nine.

Texas Tech took a 21-10 lead by hitting on nine of its first 11 shots. Baylor answered with a 20-6 run to go up by three with 4:37 left in the half.

MARCH 21 2005

When it ended, Knight had his wife Karen join him on the court. With one arm around her husband, she cried in an emotional scene for a coach whose 854 career victories are just 25 shy of Dean Smith's NCAA Division I record. "My wife's a better coach than I am," Knight explained. "If I pick three or four people that know the most about basketball, she and Pete Newell would be my first two choices, and so I just wanted to thank her for all the help she had given us in preparing for this game and this season. She deserved to be a real part of it."

Was that the season he gave back his entire salary because the team sucked? Not many coaches doing that I hear about.
