Legalized, Decriminalized, Remain Illegal?

As many of you know the move up here in Canada is towards Decriminalization, in fact, I would venture to say it if wasn't for the immense pressure from our American Cousin's to the South it would already be done. My heart breaks when I read about people in jail for 25 years for growing a plant or smoking a joint....Gangbangers going in for much less time for roberry & manslaughter? does this make sense? Has anyone seen anyone who is "too stoned" that is a danger to society?

I believe it should be leagilised but for use only at home. If you are caught under the influence when driving then you get the same justice as for people drinking and driving.

agreed truth,

similar to liquor, in fact If rules which applied to liquor also applied to marijuana it would make alot of sense. Only those with licences could sell to those of age. Strictly enforced with big fines for those who sell to minors. Additionally warnings on the products & tar levels aswell as THC levels documented on each package would allow the users to get an informed choice. Like alcohol should be taxed through the ying yang...

Marijuana is a HUGE cash crop...why leave it in the hands of the criminals & continue to spend $$$ battling bikers & dealers?

newbie...legalizing & paying taxes would still result in a cheaper price than current 'black market prices."

If Legal It would probable sell for 1$ a gram or less. Taxes might bring it up to 5$ a gram...Current costs are so high due to the "illegal" status of the drug.

Sports Savant,

Exactly my position in 1967!! Wouldn't have taken +2004 that we'd still be talking that in 2004.

The money the gov could save/generate by:

a) no longer needing to police it.
b) no longer need to prosecute it.
c) no longer need to house "marijuana" criminals.
d) tax revenue...

Anybody have any guesses at how much positive income could be generated per year?

Now let us weigh this against the potential harm:

In Amsterdam where Marijuana is still illegal but pretty much tolerated similar to almost Jay Walking here in America...studies have shown that usage is actually less then places like the USA or Canada where it is illegal. It is not the legality or illegality of the drug that stops people from using it. In fact once legal, there is a certain "mystique" that is gone which is why #'s have probably dropped in Amsterdam.....seems like a no brainer to me...what am I missing?

Sports,

I live at the farthest west point on Vancouver Island and if it becomes legal the town might fold. 50 % of economy I would say is Grass related.

In the Ottawa/Gatineau area where I live there are at least 15 Hydroponix stores...Imagine how many customers there must be to keep 15 stores in business in a city with the size of 1 million?

Some would lose jobs, but more would make jobs!!! those who lose must be adaptable...after all they chose the illegal industry to begin with..

general,

I understand that you do not care, however i imagine that you are a person that does care about civil liberties, i also imagine that you are a proponent of keeping the govt out of our lives as much as possible. I am sure that you beleive that a grown man should be allowed to place a bet if they so choose without fear of persecution, then i would argue that you should also be a proponent of the legalization of marijuana? Are they not two in the same? If there are fundamental differences please share?

It is for these reasons that I would ask of you to change your position to one of not caring to supporter of legalization?

Let me rephrase. Please legalize the weed and save some Gov't money and I still hold to the fact that I could use a puff today.

I have long not understood why i can buy Everclear but can't smoke some weed.

manufacturing creates jobs aswell as tax revenue. Marijuana can easily be grown in North America...You are forgetting once legal the value goes way down...this would have no significant effect on the economy of Jamaica...
