More than 140 million people watched all or part of CBS' coverage of Super Bowl XXXVIII from Reliant Stadium, making it the most-viewed program in television history.

CBS reported a preliminary national Nielsen rating of 41.3 with a 63 share, up 1.5 percent from 40.7/61 for Super Bowl XXXVII on ABC. Last year's game had an estimated audience of 138.9 million.

It was the highest-rated Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXXIV between the Rams and Titans rated 43.3/63 in 2000.

In Houston, the Patriots-Panthers game had a 51.4 rating and 73 share on KHOU (Channel 11), the fifth-highest rating in the country and the fourth-highest rating in history for a Super Bowl host city.

The 51.4 rating equates to 950,268 of Houston's 1.8 million television households.

Last year's game rated 46.7/65 on KTRK (Channel 13).

CBS Sports president Sean McManus said the audience built steadily throughout the broadcast after a slow start, peaking in the final half-hour as the teams scored 37 points in the fourth quarter. The last half-hour had a 53.5 rating on Channel 11.

"The tune-in for the game (during the scoreless first quarter) was not as good as the first half-hour last year, so perhaps people were not quite as excited about the game going in," McManus said. "But as I said from day one, if we had a good game that was close in the fourth quarter, we would get an excellent rating. That is what happened.

"I could not be more pleased with the quality of the production, and I'm thrilled with the rating."

McManus declined to elaborate on the network's previous statement about the controversial halftime show, produced by MTV, featuring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. The network apologized Sunday night and said the halftime "did not conform to CBS broadcast standards."

Kansas City was the top-rated market for Sunday's game, with a 57.2 rating and 71 share. Greensboro, N.C., was second at 54.1/72, followed by New Orleans at 53.70 and Boston at 52.2/78. Charlotte, the Panthers' home market, rated 49.7/72.

CBS did not provide preliminary ratings for its four-hour pre-game show. Hourly ratings in Houston began with a 13.1 rating from 1 to 2 p.m. and climbed to 43.4 for the 30-minute pre-kickoff show from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

Yeah, to bad for CBS they are facing multiple lawsuits over the halftime show.

Now AOL wants their advertising money back.
