CRIS LOSES HEAD ODDSMAKER 01/26/04 - Shrink

The on again, off again relationship with the head oddsmaker of CRIS offshore sports book is finally over. Larry, aka Mac, has left CRIS. Many insiders within the realm of offshore sports betting consider this man an icon and I agree.

He has proven that bookmaking is much more than just a numbers game. Yet, his numbers are often the sharpest of them all, depending on who is asked.

I have been fortunate enough to meet with Larry at least a dozen times. He loves to talk about bookmaking and will be the first to admit that fine tuning a line may be just as much of an art as it is a science. He certainly has more talent than most who try and emulate this man.

Although Larry may have already left a part of his legacy behind one door, it appears a newer and bigger one has opened for him. Nobody could be more deserving.

Shortly after the Super Bowl, Larry will be headed to sunny Antigua, but he won't be going there for the surf, fishing or the sun.

WWTS, arguably the largest and most recognized bookmaking operation in Antigua, has hired Larry to be their head oddsmaker.

Personally, I see this as a perfect fit. Let's not forget that, years ago, WWTS also had one of the most celebrated oddsmakers named Roger working for them. Roger tragically died of a heart attack while working in his office one day.

WWTS decided not to replace Roger at that time, but rather chose to be led by several of the pupils he trained. Maybe that was in honor of him, or maybe they didn't believe it was possible for anyone else to fill his shoes.

I truly respected that decision, if for no other reason than my own admiration and love for Roger as well.

I also had the honor of meeting Roger on a few occasions, so I completely understood why WWTS decided not to replace him until now.

But with such a competitive market, characterized by consolidations and takeovers, it makes perfect sense for a leader like WWTS to finally hire someone like Larry.

WWTS seems to always make the right decisions. Now that this mammoth sports book has gone out and snagged one of the greatest oddsmakers in our industry, I believe it will launch them to even a higher plateau while distancing themselves even further from the majority of their competitors.

FWIW - I am in no way shilling here. I KNOW for a fact that WWTS will have sharper numbers with Larry in the chair.

Perhaps WWTS will finally have tennis lines available. CRIS was/is one of the best at posting them.

Mac is a great guy.

If you REALLY want to have fun with him, just invite him to play poker or go to a casino with him...

Talk about a WHALE, lol...

Lander,

I don't think it's a bad sign at all for CRIS. From what I observed, he wasn't appreciated enough by them, so now Larry benefits by going elsewhere...

CRIS will continue to do well because they are, and will continue to be, one of the LEADERS in this biz...

I don't know who will be replacing Larry, but you can BET that it will be someone very sharp....

I have no clue who this Larry guy is. But if he's been behind the lines at CRIS for years, then everyone in the industry knows his work.

I did know Roger at WWTS. He was a wonderful guy, an excellent instructer, and very talented at tuning the line for the action he wanted.

So now Larry is off to WWTS. To me, you've got some big shoes to fill, Roger was one of the best.

A great fit, I can only imagine this is true if Larry was behind the lines at CRIS. What a great thing for WWTS to acquire him. They make some good choices. Best of luck to you Larry, You'll love Antigua and the group at WWTS who you will be working with. Also, best of luck closing out the 03/04 NFL season, bring your shop a nice win, and depart in great style.
