Now here’s an irresistible proposition for the novelty hungry punter: Ladbroke’s Big Bird Race will follow eighteen Tasmanian Shy Albatr osses as they migrate 6000 miles ac ros s open water from Tasmania to South Africa. Each bird will be fitted with an electronic tag or ‘jockey’, which will allow ornithologists and punters alike to follow their movements, via the Ladbroke’s website, as they progress on their monumental five month pilgrimage northward.

It is hoped the unique project will help highlight the plight of this endangered species which is now facing extinction, largely due to longline fishing techniques. Large baited hooks dragging behind boats kill around 30,000 albat ros s a year. All Ladbroke’s profits from the race will be fed back into sea bird conservation projects.

The race will also afford scientist the first opportunity to properly research the migratory habits of the birds. All research will be carried out by environmental scientists from the Tasmanian state government and the Conservation Foundation.
