Honest question about the NBA

Everybody knows that the NBA rarely calls travelling when a player is driving to the basket. As long as you make it look fluid/smooth, you can take a 3rd step.

But when did the 3rd step become automatic? I'm going to assume it was called in the 60s and 70s. When did the NBA decide they weren't going to enforce the friggin rules!?!?

Perfect example, LeBron had a fast-break reverse layup in the 4th quarter against the Jazz tonight. If you watch ESPN, it is a Top Ten nominee. But LeBron took 3 steps!!!!!!!!! So the refs don't make the right call, and then ESPN glorifies it as a "great" play?

Am I the only person who has a problem with this? Why is it acceptable for NBA players to break all the basic rules?

This is one of the key reasons I don't like watching basketball. It's way too subjective. It's the same with personal fouls. If you go by the strict definition there would be a foul called every 2 seconds since the players are beating each other up constantly. Too much depends on what the ref sees or wants to see.

Yep, I'll rarely watch the NBA unless I have money on the game. I play organized ball for 11 years, so it drives me NUTS when I see the refs ignore basic rules/violations.

When you watch college hoops, you'd think they're playing by different rules. They're not, they just have refs who actually enforce the rules!

I blame all of this on David Stern. If the players get a 3rd step to the basket, it increases the chance for an amazing dunk, layup, etc. Then you'll get a highlight on ESPN!

College hoops is like college wrestling. But pro hoops is more like pro wrestling. The game doesn't matter, only the hype/marketing matters.
