Yinka Dare dies of heart attack

Before I read this article, I wondered if they were gonna mention his 4 assists. Yep, they did. Geez, give the guy a break!

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- Yinka Dare, the New Jersey Nets' first-round draft pick in 1994, has died after collapsing at his home. He was 32.

A medical examiner determined that Dare, pronounced dead Friday at Englewood Hospital after being rushed to the emergency room, had a heart attack due to an arrhythmia condition that was discovered when he was in college at George Washington.

He collapsed while preparing breakfast after a routine morning workout at his home.

The 7-foot-0, 265-pound Nigerian center played 110 games in four seasons with the Nets, averaging 2.1 points and 2.6 rebounds. He had only four career assists, none in his first two seasons.

While at George Washington, he led the Colonials to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances under coach Mike Jarvis. Dare, who spent his prep years at Milford Academy in Milford, Conn., left for the NBA after his sophomore season at GWU.

Dare is survived by his parents, Gabriel and Joan, and two sisters and a brother.

I know this is poor taste, but I just realized that Sheldon Souray (Canadiens) had more assists today (5) than Yinka Dare did for his career.

Most people think he left GW too early. Based on his NBA stats, you'd have to agree.

But who knows? If he stayed @ GW for 1-2 more years, maybe something would've happened with his heart, and then the NBA teams would've been scared off.

I'm sure he made several million dollars from his first NBA contract, so hopefully he was smart with it.

Amazing how he will always be remembered for that one thing (lack of assists)

Western Diet probably takes off an avg of 5 years per person...its all about instant access and laziness to cook and eat properly...Not that this had anything to do with Dare`s untimely passing, heart arrythmia`s are much more common in very tall black men and women....

That team GW had was a very solid team, they had the most peculiar "names" on that team, I remember just about the whole starting 5 had these off the wall "Yinka" type names,lol...We use to joke about it...

For a short (very short) time, GW was the best team in the DC area. Better than Maryland, better than Gtown.

When they made that run in the NCAA Tourney, they had Yinka Dare, Omo Moses, Kwame Evans, Vaughn Jones.
