Anybody else who uses AOL are you having problems getting into sportsbook sites and other gambling forums?I can get into a few but most I get an Action Canceled page.I'm pretty ignorant about most technical stuff so any help would be appreciated.I've been using Netscape mostly as an alternative. What gets me is occasionally I get get in to some sites but most I can't. All started in last few days. Thanks.

AOL is a really strange animal.

My advice: get rid of AOL and save money.

One of my friends just checks the scores, makes a few wagers on the internet, and sends an e-mail once in a while. He was using AOL and had nothing but problems. AOL, when it installs itself, puts its tentacles throughout your hard drive and screws EVERYTHING up.

I completely eliminated AOL from his computer and set him up with a discount dial-up ISP.

He has not had any further problems.

The browser in AOL -- well AOL says it will work just like Internet Explorer -- but the truth is -- browsing in AOL is slow and strange. Some web sites don't want to work with the AOL browser. When you deal with secure web sites, more problems.

My advice:
(a) get rid of AOL
(b) get a discount dial-up isp
(c) get a standard install of Internet Explorer

You can research discount ISP's at:

http://www.freedomlist.com

I am using http://www.allvantage.com/
but depending upon your location, you may find better success with this or another ISP.

P.S.: There are several reasons why AOL is losing millions of customers -- and you have encountered one of the primary reasons -- you are not alone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dweeb.I agree about AOL being a strange animal.I have been cursing them for years and have vowed many times to drop them but I guess since I have many contacts and email set up through them I have never wanted to finally make the change.I can't tell you how many sites I have been in contact with to resolve problems with AOL compatability with them.Only myself to blame I guess if I won't change.

good advice.
I had aol/and a backup isps and used mostly aol for long time.
Found myself constantly using the other because of problems like you describe plus many others.

They offered free 2 months aol if I would give them another chance then they have this new isp netcape online theyd give me for 2 months at 1$ and 995 after that.
I didnt bite on either this time said it wasnt worth the 25 cents for the phone call to see what today would bring.

Keith:

You can switch to someone else and keep your AOL too. Here's what to do:

Check with Clark Howard
http://clarkhoward.com/

Just give him a call on the phone to ask him this. There is a way to have AOL for just $3 or $5 per month -- very few hours -- but enough to get your e-mail. There is a way to continue forever with AOL for almost nothing per month -- while you are using someone else for most of your internet needs. That way, you don't lose your contacts.

You call Clark, he will know exactly what I am talking about.

Then, switch to someone else for most of your other needs. Maybe look into cable access or DSL in your area.

Thank You

Keith,

You can keep your AOL for $4.95 per month for unlimited use by switching to cable....I also had similar issues with AOL...have not been able to install anything higher than AOL 7.0 because it conflicts with my firewall.

Just be aware. AOL plays all sorts of games. If you try to switch to the $4.95 plan -- they may stone-wall you. Just know before you call - so you tell them what plan you want and don't listen to any of their BS.

Dweeb is correct...you are supposed to be able to change your billing online by using the "billing" keyword. But when you do that I don't show the $4.95 BYOA (bring your own access)...all I show is the $4.95 limited use plan...so you have to call AOL and bitch at them to get the $4.95 BYOA plan!
