How often is the "steam" (the side most money is being bet on) right on a pick?

Kevin, not an esy question to answer. I really think it depends on what sport you are talking about. NFL is never easy to figure what move is steam and what is just public money, (although public money is usually on favorite). College Basketball is another matter, especially totals, lots of steam, and most likely a good percent gets there (quessing 58-60%). The problem is the NUMBER that gets the money is usually lost in the first hour that a game becomes a "steam" play. NBA sides and totals are similar, you snooze you lose, if you want to play steam you have to have multiple outs, and Don Best. Plus the patience to sit in front of a computer screen and watch for moves, then get down with sleepy books. Btw. just because a particular side gets most of the money, does not make it steam it the real sense of the word. JMHO.

Be it opening numbers, mid-week, closing moves, or halftimes, it matters most whose Locomotive the steam is from.

Patients and keep an eye on the sharp books like cascade and pinny sleepy books can be off by a point or 2 on halftime lines. Works great for me

WIL and HORSHOE are correct......

there isnt a simple %

several factors are invloved......

evolution of steam: sharps get down at a number........then the public rides the number untill it has no value.....

by the time the public bets the "steam" its usually at a number that sharps wouldnt take.....

take a look at basketball moves.......if you dont get down at the SAME number sharps bet.......its easy to find yourself with a loser.....in fact, imo its best to take the other side late because the number has moved too far (ie. -14 to -16')

pay attention when steam pushes the line past key numbers.........never take a bad number.....

Great example of this was the Lamar/Hawaii game. Hawaii started @ -12/12.5/13. By tip-off, Hawaii was -19 @ some books.

As dimeplayers said, all the value on Hawaii was gone by tip-off. Your only "smart" options were to take Lamar or pass on the game altogether.

Discipline is so important when it comes to gambling. Don't bet on a game if you've already missed most of the value. In the long-run, you'll be better off.

ok, but I saw it off the board 30 min before the game, because I could not see anybody sharp on Kansas. Roy Williams betrayed his kids and the kids didnt learn from Roy, so Self is basically dealing with a group of bastards who dont know how to play the game,
