A Chinese student who won an $NZ18,500 ($A16,000) poker machine jackpot was denied the prize because he was underage.

Sun Xiaofan, 19, was playing a slot machine on New Year's Eve at Christchurch Casino on New Zealand's South Island when he hit the jackpot, the Christchurch Press newspaper said.

Casino staff rushed over to congratulate him with a glass of wine and a commemorative key ring.

To receive the money, Sun had to show proof he was at least 20 years old, the legal age for entry in New Zealand's casinos.

He had none with him, the newspaper said.

Casino management denied him the winnings when he returned the next day with his driver's licence, which showed he was 19, but let him keep the key ring, it said.

"I can lose money there but I can't win money there," the newspaper quoted Sun as saying.

He said he would consult a lawyer. @@

So what is the story here. He is underage and knew, or should have known, the legal age. He will get nothing and the casino should have to pay a fine for allowing underage gamblers. Case Closed.

I would tend to agree.

I'm just curious to know what the drinking laws are there....if he's 19 and not allowed to gamble in a casino then can he be in there drinking a glass of wine?

Non-issue: if he did not meet the age requirements for playing then he is not entitled to his jackpot.

His argument that he is old enough to loose money does not stand as he did not inform the casino of his age BEFORE he started playing. If he had then I am sure that they would have not let him play.
