THE Philippine National Police announced on Saturday that they have arrested more than 2,000 people involved in illegal gambling in the last 11 days.

Police Sr. Supt. Joel R. Goltiao, the national police spokesman, said since Friday police operatives nationwide have arrested 2,089 bettors and collectors of jueteng, the popular numbers game currently being targeted by an intensified antiillegal gambling drive by the PNP.

At least P675,952. 40 in cash bets were confiscated during the raids, Goltiao said in a statement.

He also said the PNP has filed 368 criminal cases against violators of Presidential Decree 1602, also known as the Antiillegal Gambling Law. At least 266 other cases are being prepared for filing in court.

The arrests were made after the PNP chief, Dir. Gen. Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., declared that 17 regions nationwide already jueteng-free, one week after he vowed to rid the country of all kinds of illegal gambling.

Goltiao said the operation did not stop even during the Christmas holidays. “In fact, on Christmas Day, we were able to arrest eight persons in Pampanga, Sorsogon and Davao del Norte.”

According to the PNP records, 111 persons were arrested on Friday in Quezon City, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Western and Southern Mindanao.

At present, a total of 75 provinces and key cities in the country have complied with Ebdane’s order to stop all forms of illegal gambling activities. This was confirmed by the Catholic dioceses and various private organizations, Goltiao said.

On December 15, Ebdane has ordered all police commanders to crack down on illegal gambling activities. In his order, all regional police commanders will be directly responsible for any illegal gambling activity found within their respective jurisdictions.

“All regional directors and concerned directors of national support units were required to submit a weekly report of results of anti-illegal gambling operations in the area,” Goltiao said.

So they arrested one bettor for each pair of shoes Imelda Marcos used to own?
