My router is acting weird. I have two laptops and a PC on it. 2 of the computers are connected via a wireless adapter, and the other is regular Cat 5 cable into my network card.

Here's the weird part. I "borrowed" some LAN games off of Kazaa lite and the games work fine, but my router goes nut-so every once in a while (1 out of ever 5 games I'd guess) and I lose network connection from all 3 computers. The router lights indicate that everything is fine, but it's not. I simply do not have connection - and if fact sometimes its reassigning the SAME IPs to different computers. I have to unplug the router and it works just fine when its plugged back in. IPs are assigned via DHCP (I need to for my work PC and the Nazi admins didn't give me rights to setup a static IP).

I've only had this problem twice when I'm not playing these non-windows games, but about 20 times when playing the games.

It's a Linksys 2.4 GHz wireless-B Broadband router.

This is more of an inconvience than anything, but it's annoying as hell

Thanks.

I did a full Nortons AV scan with the most recent ruleset, so I don't think it's virus related.

The first thing that I'd do is update & run Spybot & Adaware. I'm FAR from a fan of Kazaa-it's a spyware loaded piece of shit....I want to say that it installs Gator, Gain, and a couple others....I've seen machines trashed by it.

I'm not sure what kind of games you are talking about, but if they are online games, it could be a couple different things.

Get the Kazaa associated shit off, and go from there.

Lander, I just reread your problem....

Assuming that you have a Linksys router or similar, it sounds like the router config is flaking out on you--I've never heard of one assigning the same IP to more than one machine, but I've seen these things do some weird shit.

I'd venture a guess that resetting the router config & IP addresses would do the trick (but you still want to get the Kazaa shit off your machine).

I have Kazaa Lite K++ - it's suposed to be a hacked Kazaa without the Spyware (or so I hear).

I'll ran the Spybot just to be sure and everything is ok.

I'm guessing it's just the router itself. I was playing Worms Armagedon when I had this problem.

The Linksys error pages do not mention this software specifically but acknowledges problems with other games, so perhaps it's a similiar error with the router

They recommend static IP's. To my knowledge you either get DHCP or static IP assignment, but maybe it's possible for a combo??

Do you know if it's possible to have a combination of some static IP's and the rest being DHCP on the same internal subnet?

I don't see this.

Are you talking about the router config? Or each PC's network config?

Lander, if you only have 3 machines, just go static IPs & rule it out.

You could go mixed if you used different ranges, but there's no reason to get that complicated.

If you still have problems after assigning static IP's, do a complete reconfig of the router.

p.s. These routers DO go bad-they are nothing but one ciruit board. About 20% that I've dealt with shit out within 3 years.

Network config should be an option in the Worms program.

If that doesn't work, setting the datarate (in datarate.txt) to about 8-10K (instead of the 15-20K it's usually set to) might stop it from disconnecting.

TT,
I cannot use a static IP on my work computer. It's setup for DHCP and I do not have privlidges to change that.

Is "mixed" range difficult?

Ideally, what I would like to do is set my 2 machines as static, then allow for 1 IP in the DHCP pool which my work machine could obtain when needed.

This would allow keep potentially bandwidth thiefs from hoping on my little LAN

Shouldn't be, try setting the dhcp range to 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100 & the static IP to 192.168.1.33 (33 or anything between .4-99).

Also, I think linksys wants a mask of 255x4, but you might want to check that.

Holy Shit
I'm not sure if I just took a crash course in Chinese after reading this thread. Or not.

Problem TTinco.

It works fine the way you suggested except ...
DNS servers need to be listed and I think my cable provider changes these from time to time, so this could become problematic (especially as books try to avoid attacks) as a couldn't imagine having to memorize IPs

.

Any suggestions? or am I destined to DHCP

"cbckxfb" not "cbckkfb". The way you wrote it will cause a page fault.

lander: are you trying to host a worms game or just play on one?

If you're using static IP's, you're stuck with static DNS servers-which I really doubt that your ISP would change that often(but it could still be a pain in the ass).

If you set them all to DHCP, the machines should be given IP's in sequence.

TOB,
Hosting one, but I've tried hosting it off of different PCs on my mini-LAN and I have the same problem.

TT,
I think I'll stick with the DCHP and occasional Worms meltdown on my router
icon_frown.gif
, I'm getting frustrated with this networking stuff. Thanks for all the the help though - I really do appreciate it.

I had another question, purely out of curiousity not need - when I NET SEND messages is takes ~1 minute for the other PC to get the message. This seems extremely slow for a 3 PC 2.4 GHz network
icon_frown.gif
...

Is this delay because I'm not using a switch to manage traffic? Or is this some sort of priority delivery (ie, do NET SEND when no other network traffic needs to be routed)?
