Handicapping the handicappers

In another thread it was stated that some cappers in one of the sports forums have winning records for this season. While congratulating them I asked a question that someone felt the need to flame me for: how does one know which cappers will have winning records before the fact? I think that this could be the topic of a very educational discussion. It was not meant as a flame.

I'm starting this new thread because I would genuinely like to hear other posters' views on following other handicappers, and in choosing which ones to follow.

Do a lot of them have trial periods that let you see how they do before you send them money?
If the trial is for a week or so then you might get a feel about them. I use a site that allows you to get their picks for free, you just don't get a write up about the games. They keep a running total at the bottom of the page so you can see how they have done each month. I guess they make their money from advertising?

I have paid money before to big name handicappers and seen them go 2-7 or worse a few days in a row. Sometimes they have 12 games on the go. You would need a large bank roll to cover all those games! I ended up losing a lot of money (not including what I paid them!).

I wasnt talking about pay handicappers but the ones who post their picks on message borads.
