Who or which team goes first?

I was curious to know how the beginnings of a few matches, meets, games, etcetera were started.
Meaning - Which team has the option to kick or receive in football is decided by a coin flip, baseball is home field advantage, basketball is a jump ball, face-off in hockey.....
But how do they decide who will get to serve first in tennis (by rank?), or throw the first strike in bowling (who has the bigger belly?), or serve the first in volleyball, etc?
May be a dumb question, but I didn't know if it was a coin toss for all the rest too.....
Thanks in advance.

These days, the most entertaining part of watching tennis is the coin flip.

Geez, how far as this sport fallen in the last 20 years?
