The Prohibition of Gaming Machines Act, which is to be enforced in Bermuda this summer, is forcing bar owners to look for legal loopholes to enable them to carry on gambling - and they think they may just have found one. As the law prohibits specifically ‘coin operated machines’, businesses have been introducing touch operated computer monitors for which customers pay for a PIN number to play. Effectively, computer monitors run off a home computer, where customers have an account, like an online casino. Bar owner Rick Olson told the he Bermudan Royal Gazette: “Wherever a grey area is, I will certainly try to exploit it. It's a great way to do business because you don't keep cash at hand, you don't have to worry about being broken into.”
However Tourism Minister Renee Webb said Government could easily amend the law to make it apply to ‘aperture-less’ machines. She said: “We would not get rid of one to be replaced by another.@@
