SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Record-setting running back Mike Hart completed his playing career at Onondaga High School near Syracuse Friday with 26 carries for 390 yards and six touchdowns in a 41-21 win over the Cambridge Indians.

Hart's performance - which included touchdown runs of 38, 19, 86, 84, 26 and 29 yards - gave the Onondaga Tigers its second Class-D crown in the past three years.

"I told my team that if you stop them on defense I'll do the rest on offense," Hart said. "My line blocked well. You will not stop our offense. It was only a matter of time before we broke one loose."

The next time Hart steps on the gridiron will be as a freshman for Lloyd Carr's Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines.

"I'll have a lot of hard work in the off season," Hart said. "I have to prove that I can play with the bigger boys."

In the meantime, Hart can look back on a high school career that rewrote the National Federation of State High School Association's rushing record book.

Hart set new national career marks for consecutive 100-yard games with 47, shattering the old mark of 38 set by Billy Sims between 1972 and 1975 in Texas.

His record is also 19 better than Emmitt Smith's, who between 1983 and 1986 ran for 100 yards in 28 consecutive games in Florida.

Hart's career touchdown total of 204 surpassed the mark of 178 set by T.A. McLendon of Calbemarle, N.C. between 1999 and 2001.

Hart also scored 1,246 points during his career, compared to McLendon's 1,076.

The one record that eluded Hart was the one set nearly 50 years ago by Ken Hall of Sugar Land, Texas, who racked up 11,232 total yards during his high school career.

Hart missed that record by 187 yards, though Onondaga's seasons are shorter than those that Hall played in.

Man 187 yards was close!

I'm glad to see someone still gets "The Hearld"

I grew up in Fort Pierce and wrestled with my dog "George" every Sat and Sun during my high school career to get it first.

This was back when I-95 paused in Vero.
