My computer has been acting funny.I am not able to get to yahoo or google it takes me to some other bullshit search engine. Also I came home the other day and my computer was locked up and it had a message like from windows xp saying I needed the password to unlock it,but naturally I forgot it.So then I shut it down and then it was o.k.Then a day later I come home and the message on my firewall tells me it intercepted a syn attack, click here to trace attacker.Well it just kept pinging a bunch of different computers,I hope I am saying this right so someone can understand.Well I don't know too much about computers and I looked in my mcafee book for my firewall and it said that a syn attack is a kind of dos attack.Just want to know how to get rid of this shit.I would like to be able to get to yahoo or google.Any help is appreciated.

Nick, go to www.trend.com & run the free online scanner. Then download, install & run ad-aware & spybot.

Check in after that, but that should do the trick.

I'm not a computer guy so I took the simple approach. My computer was running awfully slow and freezing up on me so I just saved the files that I needed from Excel and Word. That's all I really need and wiped out everything else. I installed Windows again and now it runs fine.

Thank for the help guys.

TT I ran the housecall scan I believe it is call from that link.It found 5 infected files. Then it said they are uncleanable. Then it says if something comes up uncleanable to press delete which I did.I don't think it did anything. Also where can I download the spybot from.I already downloaded and ran ad-awage but that doesn't seem to help.

Nicky, I believe what you have is a hijacker aka spyware/virus of the worst kind. You should go to spybot and d/l this, then run it, if the hijacker/spyware is running in the backround Spybot will tell you one or more of the programs weren't removed becasue they were running in the backround. All you do is follow what it tells you and restart your computer. Spybot will be the first program that starts, before the spyeware gets a chance to start. Spybot will then run again and scan yer PC again. After that click "fix selected items" and you should be good after that.

I would also suggest you goto the windows update site at www.microsoft.com and get all the security updates for you XP. There is a chance you may have a worm (virus) of some sort, so always update your virus protection software and always do windows update, like once every 2 months should be good.

Also, get rid of Ad-aware, it's a POS, IMO
good luck

Nick, since we now know that you had viruses, go back to Trend's site & download their Sysclean utility. You'll also have to download their virus pattern file.

This should "undo" whatever changes that the viruses had made.

Thanks for the help again.

I downloaded spybot and ran it and it keeps freezing up at the same point. It will run down to about 41 seconds and then stop and the message comes up that it is not responding.

Yep....you need Sysclean.

Some of these viruses do some pretty heavy damage-you might be screwed, but it's still worth a shot.

You are CRAZY to not have a real time virus scanner on your machine, it's just ASKING for trouble.....and I won't even get into the security aspect of why it's so important.

Ad~aware is great also, here's the link .....
http://www.lavasoft.de/default.shtml.en
On this page, look over to the left, towards the bottom, and click on Download, Underneath Support...............Then........
Scroll to about the middle of next page, where it says AD~AWARE 6 Standard Edition, and it gives you several links to go and get it.

I ran the sysclean and then looked at the logfile and everything said access denied.
Also since I started running all these programs my computer is very loud there is a constant humming.

The noise that you hear is probably just your machine working it's ass off while it scans the files.

You're okay as long as Sysclean didn't pop up any boxes naming viruses or worms. Try to rerun Spybot now. I don't know what is wrong with Spybot lately, but it seems to be "hanging" for a few people.

If you let AdAware remove everything it found, there is probably only a couple things that Spybot would have found.

Are your other problems resolved?

What ever it is, it's nasty! Seems that Spybot runs into the malicious file and hits a road block.

Just thought of an idea. Nicky, what Operating System are you running? cause if your running XP or better, I beleive it has an option to roll back your registry or a goback option to a certian date prior to your problem. I would consult your computer's manufactor for help on this issue. YOU SHOULD NOT TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN! Playing with your registry, if you don't know what your doing, is like playing with fire!

Keep us updated.
