Any opinions on the new angle that Pinnacle is taking on some of their NBA lines?

For instance, games at -14, they are at -12.5 -131. This is just one example.

Dont like it at all, Fort Knox tried that crap when they were still open and we all see where that got them.

They do this on HT lines which is letting you buy points on halftime, which is very strong.

This is not a new bookmaking method they are trying out, its called autopilot.

When they pack it in they set their lines to move automatically on action.

On their NHL lines overnight for example, every time you bet a nickle the line moves 2 cents, and on a dime 4 cents (in the old days when their limits were a nickle they moved 3 cents off every nickle bet). Its the ultimate "moving on action".

For the spread sports, they are utilizing the same principal but since they don't move the points, the money attached gets out of whack to those prices you quoted.

I recently had an "autopilot" experience with Pinnacle. I placed a dime on Wisconsin moneyline at -124 around midnight and it immediately moved to -126.

Noticed this too. What's the point? I'm sure there is one, but I don't get it. I think they may be outsmarting themselves. Like a lot of people on this site do.

oh, there's a reason they do it.

it benefits THEM.

IMO it offsets some unwanted action, and/or invites/baits the 'incorrect' side.

they dont do it on every game.

I dont look at it as buying points, I look at the other side, the SELL option.

now this whole concept can get very complicated especially when throwing in the value of a point or half point in the NBA, but is a point or half point worth the same in every game? In my opinion, no.

Pinnacle's strategy may also be to try to keep from being middled, and middled at the half from a full game.

I'm not very good at explaining these types of things, but it makes sense to me. I guess the bottom line is that a book's goal is to induce action, and the more action on a bad number the better. Worst case scenario is to reduce action on a side they dont want action on. It would seem like anything other than this would be bad for profitability, or maybe I'm missing too much.

One other thing I've noticed-- I havent been watching as closely as I could, but it seems like Pinnacle 'switches off' the "autopilot" at some point. In other words the number and vig move to relative market standard price quickly around 10am CST (not at all sure about the exact time and there are different situations), and I think sometimes it is done at once which leads me to believe that it is not entirely driven by action. Maybe they are trying to avoid some of the big moves which occur during this time.

I'm just assuming most of this, I'm curious enough to try to find out for certain.

Pinnacle did this a lot last year on the overnight hoop lines. In fact there was a time when they had drop down menus where you could select from 4 different lines on each game with a different corresponding vig. IMO it's just a way to draw more action on the overnight bets.
