Be prepared with documents and proof that you can be a resident here for local retail banks such as those mentioned. The paperwork for a bank account is getting pretty ridiculous, all thanks to the Patriot Act.

You don't need to be resident to open a US banking account.

I hold a non-resident account at the Bank of America that has no fees. Be prepared to present your passport, in person, and one other piece of id to establish a non-resident account.

Just check to be sure, the Feds require tax ID to open a bank account so I am surprised just an ID will suffice these days.. Besides be prepared, even if your deposit is cash a lot of banks put a 5 to 10 day business hold on your deposit and you won't have access to it right away so read all the fine print and be certain to ask lots of questions.

one of the biggest money makers for american banks is free checking. the average person that opens one of these accts does it with 100 dollars. their nsf charges are $25 and people who use these accts mostely college students tend to bounce multiple checks. so for an 100 dollar investment they make 25% interest on you. now this does not matter if you never bounce checks. but its huge and thats why banks do it, thats also why they give away free stuff
