NOT ONLY THE BEST LINEMAN IN THE COUNTRY, THE BEST PLAYER OVERALL

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz made a rare pitch Tuesday for a rare offensive lineman - Robert Gallery.

"I don't make extreme statements, but if this guy doesn't win the Outland Trophy, it'd be a travesty," Ferentz said Tuesday, referring to the award that annually goes to the best interior offensive or defensive lineman in college football.

Ferentz, normally a fence-sitter when asked to compare players, indicated he was worried that Gallery, a 6-foot 7-inch, 320-pound senior who was a preseason all-American, won't be appreciated in Outland voting, which is done by the Football Writers Association of America.

"It'll be a real sad thing," Ferentz said. "Don't take my word for it. Talk to people that watch linemen day in and day out. Talk to the NFL personnel that come through here - that are watching every lineman in the country. There's not even a race."

Larry Fitzgerald, WR Pittsburgh. Big, fast, great hands, I think he's better than 90% of the receivers in the NFL right now and he's only a sophomore which may hurt him in the voting.

To me this is the rare case where the guy who gets the votes is most deserving unlike the Rond Daynes and Gino Torettas of past years.

One more vote for Fitzgerald. I also believe he's better than most NFL receivers already. My #2 goes to Eli Manning. If they beat LSU Saturday, he has to move up even more. Sorry Mr. White, but seemingly anyone could QB Oklahoma.

I think White is a lock..if they didnt give it to Mcgahee last year they wont give it to Fitzgerald this year..

The current odds at BetCBSports.com on who will win this coveted award are as follows:

Jason White (Oklahoma)) +100
Larry Fitzgerald (Pittsburgh) +250
Eli Manning (Mississippi) +350
Chris Perry (Michigan) +350
Kevin Jones (Virginia Tech) +450
Philip Rivers (NC State) +450
Field (All Others) +600

White has come a long way since last year when he couldn't even drop back without stumbling.

Dicky: one might point out that you can get essentially a Bonus Bet on Fitz to win it by betting on both White and Fitz to win for the same amount (if you believe one or the other will win)

What is your opinion? I doubt they'll write a bet on the others at those prices, 170%??

I think one of the two will win it, and White has had some phenomenal numbers this year whether or not he DOES play with OU, and so has Fitz - but Fitz of course plays in the beloved EAST, where they love to favor their own in the balloting. QBs usually win this thing, but then you've got the Eastern influence - tough to call for me between the two, but I think White will get it if he doesn't fall down the next 2 games.
