Let's see, Bill Russell led his college team to 56 straight wins and two straight NCAA titles. Won 11 world championships in 13 years with The Boston Celtics. AVERAGED 22.5 rebounds per game in his career. Best centers begin and end with Bill Russell.

If you grow up in Philly you are born to detest the 80's Laker's teams and the 70's Celtics, sorry.

1. Bill Walton...Led Portland to the NBA Championship over the mighty 76ers. Then he got injured and was never the same.

2. Jabbar...The skyhook was unstoppable. Led Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA Championship.

3. Wilt...Scored 100 points in a single game! One year he avg. over 50 points a game!

Shaq? Please tell me you are kidding.

1. Jabbar/Alcindor Far and away the best all around center in the game.
2. Bill Russell A great team player, and very strong individual defender
3. Moses Malone Imagine how good he would have been if he had gone to college!

I think both Shaq and Stilt have one very big downside to consider when looking at all-time greats at their positions-- Both are physically freaks of nature(relative to their times) compared to others, and their excellence is not due to skill at the position, but their physique. 7 footers were rare when Chamberlain was around. 320 pound mobile 7 footers are still rare.

That said, one on one, I think Shaq would have smoked Wilt. And put Shaq back in that era, with no lane and 3 second violation, and 100 points would probably be a halftime effort.

Robfunk,

I agree with you there. Bad thing is, he looks to be having the foot problems that have plagued some other big men in the past. If he keeps having them, its all done for him.

I think Hakeem in his prime was as good as anyone. Amazing footwork, great shot blocker, his Dream Shake fadeaway was unstoppable. The second year he won the championship after outplaying Robinson and then Shaq was the best NBA playoff center play I ever saw.

I know Wilt and Jabbar had better stats, especially Wilt but when Wilt played there wasn't a whole lot of size to compete with.

Robfunk, I like you , you really know your stuff. What you say about O'neal is correct, just as we were discussing Keyshawn yesterday. Like you say, Bill Russell would get abused today, but Rob, it doesn't end with him, most of those "old~school" guys would get dominated today by Shaq. And Seymour, your right, Shaq belongs on every list also.Wilt had the advantage of playing against much smaller players back then, and this may sound bad, but many more whites, so I he belongs around 4th...

1.Kareem
2.Shaq (yes, already! Obvious #1 when it's over)
3.Hakeem

Mudbone,

Yes, for a couple years, Olajuwan was very good. But over the course of his career, he did not maintain that standard of excellence. Same problem as Walton.

kareem, hakeem, and tom boerwinkle. Boerwinkle made the Bulls the powerhouse that they were and may have been better than kareem, shaq, and hakeem combined! A little humor for you all today who go back a few years.
