According to Graeme Wearden, in a special report to CNETAsia, and BBC Online, University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) research scientists have completed a study which shows that office workers who play computer games at their desks should be encouraged to continue playing. It has been found that online distractions actually “boost productivity and morale.”

The Dutch scientists found that “... playing computer games at work can improve an employee's job satisfaction and cut absenteeism.”

Researchers reportedly took a number of employees from a Dutch insurance firm, allowing one group to play computer games -- such as minesweeper and solitaire -- for up to one hour a day, while “restricting the others.” After a month, the employees of both groups were tested, and “those who had been permitted to play games at their desk were found to be happier about their workload and performance.”

The study’s leader, Professor Jeffrey Goldstein, said that games such as solitaire could “help people to work better by giving their brain a rest from complex work-related tasks.”

The report also stated that the scientists now “hope to repeat the study using more complicated computer games, such as strategy or combat simulations.”@@

lol!

Assuming you didn't whip this one up for the helluva of it, Dante, I laughed out loud reading this 'study' and almost spit up some of my first cup of java. Of COURSE people would be happier - I bet they'd be even happier if they could get laid for free at lunchtime by company prostitutes who are certified 'disease-free' by the company doctors. Ecstatic, in fact. But obviously missing from this 'study' is any indication that they actually became more productive overall than a non-game-playing employee as a result of playing games for up to an hour - making up a lost hour every day by increased productivity in the typical office because you're 'happy'? Bullshit.

After a month, the employees of both groups were tested, and “those who had been permitted to play games at their desk were found to be happier about their workload and performance.”

Uh, last time I checked the reason people go to work is to earn money to make a living, not to play computer games to be 'happier about their workload and performance'. Who WOULDN'T be happier about a workload up to an hour less every day? And of COURSE they'd say they were happier about their performance, but naturally lacking at least in this blurb is any objective measurement of their performance 'before and after', relative to their game-less workmates.

As far as absenteeism, want to know how to reduce that? Reduce the number of paid days off so real goof-offs would have to use paid days to fvck off, and for real abusers fire them.

Here's a suggestion: let them play the games during their lunch hour at their desk.
