HOBART, Ind. -- A northwest Indiana woman gave her husband a fatal dose of insulin so he would not discover that she had spent some of his savings, authorities said.

Barbara Joy Garcia, 51, of Hobart, was charged Monday with murder in the death of her husband, Cipriano Garcia. She was being held without bond in the Lake County Jail pending a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

Her husband's body was found Nov. 3 near a pond in a wooded area across the Illinois border, wrapped in a tarp and tied to two cinder blocks, according to court documents.

Police said Garcia wanted to conceal the killing and hide her husband's body so she could continue to collect his Social Security and pension checks.

If convicted, she faces from 45 to 65 years in prison.

Garcia, a retired licensed practical nurse, admitted to drugging her husband's coffee and then giving him a fatal dose of insulin on Oct. 30, according to court documents.

Neither of the Garcias were diabetic or needed insulin for medical purposes, said Hobart Police Chief Brian Snedecor.

An overdose of insulin can cause hypoglycemia, a condition whose symptoms range from simple fatigue to coma.

Garcia had a history of gambling away her husband's money, court documents said. Garcia told police she decided to kill her husband because she was afraid he would find out she had spent $4,000 from his savings account.

Hobart, a residential community in Lake County, is home to four of Indiana's 10 casinos.

It was not clear Monday whether the $4,000 actually was spent at casinos, Snedecor said.

Garcia laced her husband's coffee with a sleep-inducing medication and then, when he was asleep, injected 10 shots of insulin into his body, according to court documents. Garcia had apparently taken the insulin from a relative's home.
