The ABC is among the first to employ new pop-up software to rebuke members of staff who can’t resist a sneaky gamble at work. In the wake of a staff member being fired and others receiving stern warnings to 'get back to work', management have employed a system which will warn workers that the site they are about to enter would put them in severe breach of company policy and could result in the termination of their employment.
While many have objected to the policy, feeling that they are being treated like children, others have welcomed the scheme as preferable to the secretive, Orwellian style of internet monitoring that other companies employ. ABC management says the decision to be 'in-your-face about it' was deliberate.
'We need to let people know what is acceptable,' said human resources director Colin Palmer. 'In a way (the ABC) is doing staff a favour in being so overt,' said Charles Heunemann, managing director of software monitoring company, SurfControl.
Internet abuse is now one of the most common causes of staff dismissal in Britain, and it has been estimated that internet surfing costs businesses $1 billion each year.@@
