Worldpay.com one of the Internet’s leading payment system, which serves thousands of online casinos and e-retailers is reportedly under heavy hacker attack from unknown online assailants, majorly affecting its operations and thousands of websites and online operators transacting on Worldpay’s payment gateway. The company operates a similar service to PayPal, one of the Internet’s largest payment gateways. Over 10,000 online companies are expected to be affected by this outage.


The company told news agencies that its payment and Internet network have been flooded with automatically generated computer requests, choking the servers and the entire payment network, bring transactions to a grinding halt. Technically, this is known as ‘Denial-Of-Service’ or a DOS attack.


Carolyn McAdam, a spokesperson for Worldpay said, 'The system has been flooded on a massive scale.' The company’s technical staff said that their security systems in the payment and administration levels are safe. Worldpay is assuring customers and partners that it is working round the clock to address the problem at the earliest.


The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, which owns and operates Worldpay currently serves more than 27,000 customers worldwide. Fortune 500 companies like Vodafone and Sony Music Entertainment to hundreds of online casinos, gaming operators rely on the service extensively. Worldpay operates in over 70 countries providing services from Australia to Sweden and accepts payments on credit cards transactions for Visa, MasterCard, Diners and Amex Express. The DOS attack started two days ago, and has not slowed down even after 48 hours.


Early this year, Visa and MasterCard disclosed that a hacker access their credit card database with over 5 million accounts.@@
