First of all I am not a runner, I can run but I am not wild about it, especially long distance running....BUT, I need to have something to shoot for, I need a new goal so why not, I will o after the 5 minute mile...I have tried this before but its always in the winter when its hard to really stay focused....Barry Bonds hit 500 HR`s has 500 SB`s, well my equivalent is to bench press 400 lbs and run a 5 minute mile on the same day...Now I have the bench part down ,lol...Its the 5 minute mile I have to really work on! How should I go about this...Any runners out there?

Easy Jman if you are built for it. Big thighs or upper legs are not ideal. Just run a mile per day, skipping a couple a week to let the muscles rest and build. Breath in your nose count to 3, exhale out your mouth count to 3, keep the breathing on par. you can do it, but it will take dedication. No pain no gain. try to get faster each week.

Good luck

What are you kidding me Journey?? NO WAY you have a chance in hell at accomplishing a mile in 5 minutes unless you are a 102 lb man.. Even the Nigerians can't do this, and they run marathons for a living. And you are not 102 lbs, you are a big guy..

Can Journey ever run a mile in 5 min.

NO off the board
YES off the board

____

that's because you will never be able to do it Journey. My record is 7:02.. Keep dreaming kiddo.

Gotta run.. Off to see my last majorleague ballgame ever in this city. Thanks for the memories expos..

I cycle quite a bit, actually just got back from a long ride...I once saw a guy "juggling" while running a 5 minue mile!!! This is something I could look back and be proud of, I am being very serious here...I want this on my tombstone LOL, like the back of my baseball card....

Journeyman "He once ran a 5 minute mile and Bench Pressed 400 lbs." July 1 2004...Something to that effect!

It can be done man...Women can do this ! i SURE AS HELL CAN...I admit it won t be easy...First of all I do get quite a bit of cardio, biking...Its 4 times around the track, break that down 1:15 per time...If you can get around that track ONE TIME @ 1:15 then you can work up to it! It can be done...I had done 2:30 for two times, so i had the pace half way....I was just wondering if anyone had a system to build up to this...Sick, I could run a 7 minute mile right now! 5 can be done...If I yhad o bet i`d say I can`t do it, but I think I can getb close....There has to be a way to go about this...I think my bulk works against me big time...But I am not THAT bulky just 208...

J, train running on a slight incline or into a slight breeze .. a cheap resistance training if you will.

I used to run the 5K's (slowly, but surely) & nothing ever got me under 21 minutes until I started running the treadmills with the incline .... made the actual races seem like a breeze. I know that's hardly a time to brag about, but the point is that it sped me up

I didnt think it was impossible...I have ran 2:30 for a half mile, last winter...So its a matter of being able to maintain that pace for another two laps...It will be very hard because even at that point I was running all out..I will give it a shot with the breathing...What is sickgambler talking about ,lol, like 7 minutes is some great feat...People have broken 4 minutes for God sake! I think there`s a commercial the woman in her 50`s running a 5 minute mile,lol... I have to go for it! Maybe I can come back in the spring and hustle sick out of some money I`ll make him a wager I can runa 5 minute mile, all the while knowing I can ( if I can lol)

But thats good advice...I have 10 years on you though,lol..And I have old soccer knees, I am not lightning fast like I once was...I was FAST for a white kid back in my soccer glory days...I have lost atleast 1 and a half steps off any sprinting...not that I was a sprinter...I think I can do this 5 minute mile...

If you can run the mile in your current state in 7 minutes and you weigh 208 lbs, then I would say that you are a pretty experienced runner already.

I started running regularly back in May for the 1st time in my life. I am in my mid 20's now and it took me at least a month of running on the treadmill at a local gym just to see any cardio results. I ran for 2 months regulary on the treadmill and then I took it to the track where it is a whole new ballgame when you factor in the heat and the hard running surface.

I reached my goal of 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes on the treadmill in this period of time, but not on the track. My best on the track was 1 mile in 7 min 30 seconds.

If you can accomplish the mile in 5 minutes, I would consider you to be in excellent shape and you would be deserving of a

Jman, Some of the breathing technique is mental as well. If you are focused on your breathing pattern, 123 etc..., then less thought about the pain.

J-Man, I started running when I was in 5th grade and never stopped till 12th grade.I ran track and cross country, did the 400, 800, mile and 2 mile in our meets and did fairly good, my favorite running event by far was cross country racing. Remember Bill Murray telling that slow kid at camp in that movie back in the 80's, "Run like woody the wabbit, woody the wabbit" as sad as it sounds it worked for me and got me pumped up when running through the woods like a mad man on a mission, lol My best mile is 4:39, best 2 Mile is 10:19, best 3.1 Mile (average cross country race) was 17:10.

Anyway, The General gave you some good advice, try and get a breathing rythum down, that's the most important part of running, next comes speed, you need to gain speed and how you do that is by running wind sprints.

Run for 100yds as fast as you can, then slow way down and jog for the next 200 YDS, then sprint 100yds as fast as you can. Essentially your building speed and endurance at the same time by doing this. When you try to attain the goal, there's several options avalible: either you run flat out and try and kill your self and maybe, just maybe make your goal, or you pace your self, start out fast for the first 100, then try and get your breathing under control and get a consistant stride going, after that your speed, breathing and stride should get you there.. Try settting a goal of running the 400 in a certain time that will get you to your goal, then set a goal for the 800, then the mile. Once you reach your goal in the 800 (which should be around 2;25 for the first 800) that 5 minute mile will be laughable.

Remember:

#1Breathing pattern
#2speed/wind sprints
#3good stride
#4pace your self

I recomend New Balance running shoes, if your gonna do it, do it right.

Oh and also, if you do have access to a track, take adavantage of it.

GOOD LUCK

OH AND BY THE WAY, I'AM A WASHED UP DRUNK THESE DAYS!
