Through the first 144 games this fall -- that's about one-eighth of the season -- there already had been 31 shutouts, including a pair of 0-0 ties. That put the league on pace for about 265 shutouts by season's end -- the record is 186.

Through Sunday's play, the NHL's goals-per-game average still was below 5.0, and if that were to continue, you'd have to go back to the Original Six days to find the last time goals were that scarce.

This has been suprising to say the least in light of the new rule making goalie pads smaller.

Am I doing my math wrong? My stats say the average total score this year in the NHL is 5.10, about where it was last year. I don't think there is anything unusual about the NHL this year, just that the first week was a low scoring one and so the stats are still skewed low, but they are coming up.
