Someone with advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated...

Self employed and looking for full health insurance, anyone have a good idea about rates and best option on this?

Not sure on rates Jman..but I have seen Blue cross advertise to insure the self employed..maybe you can get a simple plan to cover you if our get seriously sick.

J-MAN.....I am 43 and never need prescriptions or go to the doctor so all I really need is protection from major hospital bills. Use a plan from Blue Cross that costs me a mere $40 a month and covers me for any major health problem. If your young and healthy, this is all that you may need. I have a $5,000 deductible and a $1,000,000 cap on benifits.

Blowing it off till I am 50.....eat healthy and no bad family history in that matter. But your right, probably gambling. But, thats me, a gambler.

I use Mega Life. They beat the hell out of our local Blue Cross rates. For self employed they are very popular.

http://www.healthinsurance.com/ is the biggest database of plans based on your state. Find out who is offering plans that are attractive and then try to get hold of a local rep for that group. They can provide more details about programs.

Full Insurance can be fairly high since you aren't in a group. $250 minimum I would think to as high as $500.

Even for catastrophic insurance like Fish mentions, I have never seen a rate of $40 per month - not even close. Would likely expect to pay at least $150.

Individual plan from State Farm is $100 per month $1500-$2000 deductable, drug card(No more than $10 - generic). Family is more obviously, but the individual plan is very affordable.

Was paying like $100 a month in Vegas before I found this $40 deal here in Florida.
 
How healt care system works in USA? If you are unemployed what happens when you get sick or need an operation? What do you get if you pay healt insurance in USA? Can you go to any hospital you want or what?

In Finland employed pays 1.5% of incomes as a healt care insurance and because in Finland unemployed gets some money also he/she pays also that 1.5% of unemployment benefit.

Theoretically healt care in Finland is free, but nowdays citizen must pay $20 almost every hospital visit.
One night in public hospital pays about $15 and all operations are free, but there is big waiting list for some operations, so in some cases you can't use public hospitals and forced to go to a private hospital. There is no difference in quality between private- and public hospitals. Some doctors works for both places.

This is a serious issue in our household. Thought I am insured, Mrs. Jones is in her fifties and is trying to find any full-time work just to get insurance which as soon as she gets she then will quit and take Cobra. Thanks, we'll be checking those links.

BTW, do not scoff at her age guys. She is still a hot blonde, and a former magazine nude model with assets still similar to Intuition Bets' avatar. Her actions and words are the basis of my answer in that thread.

I assume you realize how expensive it is to maintain a Cobra policy, and that you can keep one only for a maximum of 18 months unless the insured fulfills the following (and THEN can only get another 11 months)??

"Have a ruling from the Social Security Administration that he or she became disabled within the first 60 days of COBRA continuation coverage.

Send the plan a copy of the Social Security ruling letter within 60 days of receipt, but prior to expiration of the 18-month period of coverage."

COBRA would be cheaper than an individual health plan, but what are you going to do when the 18 month limit is reached?

As lakerfan said this Mega Health and Life is a great deal, can't be singled out for rate increases or cancellation is huge. Plus they pay actual expenses not reasonable or normal charges. Its great coverage.

Jazz this is my situation,

I had an individual HMO with my last employer. I went through Cobra for 18 months with payments of about $160 per month. After the Cobra ran out my insurer was obligated by law to offer a conversion policy which for 2 years was around $300 to $360 per month. In no way did that differ from my original coverage.

Finally just several months ago the premium jumped to over $500 a month.

However as long as I make my payments on time, and can afford them, they cannot by law cancel my policy. If the premium were to let's say double suddenly, I have some supposed recourse with my state insurance commissioner.

I need to keep this policy because I do suffer from chronic pain, have had three joint surgeries within the last five years and am basically holding out and waiting as long as possibly can for two joint replacements due to my rather long involvement in contact sports. The pain is eased somewhat by meds. I also need meds for blood pressure and several other unrelated conditions.

Mrs. Jones however last worked for a non-profit organization which was not required to offer Cobra. It is a serious problem because she does have a heart condition and the individual agents have just laughed when they saw her medical history. She needs an HMO through work which does not exclude pre-existing conditions. Until she gets it we are rolling dice around here.

We are both in a position where we are fortunate not to need to work any longer, but are still years away from Medicare. If things continue as they are, we'll both be flipping burgers at some large franchise chain for at least a few months.

Whoa!!! I was certainly not prying for any kind of personal information that detailed - sorry! But now I can see why you're doing it - best of luck to you, and as far as pain medication goes, Maker's Mark is not a bad prescription

Does anyone have any info or a link to info about COBRA? I have been told that I am eligible for it but no one at work knows anything specific about it. any help would be appreciated.

Ask your Human Resource, benefits, or maybe even payroll person about COBRA. If they don't know anything about it, then they shouldn't be in that job. In fact, it is probably illegal for them NOT to know about it and offer it. Basically, you should be able to stay on their plan and pay the full premium yourself for, I think, two years.
